Dr. Lana Potts CCFP is a Medical Doctor, Indigenous Health and First Nation Expert, family physician at the Siksika Health and Wellness Centre, near Calgary. Dr. Lana Potts was a founding member of the Aboriginal Wisdom Council, a provincial board that advises on improving health outcomes in Indigenous communities. She is currently working in a full time role as a consultant with Deloitte Canada.

DR. LANA POTTS BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Lana Potts, Saahkwaapiim is a grassroots Blackfoot Family Physician who specializes in First Nations Health. She is a renowned speaker and is known for sharing her lived experience and is an authority in Indigenous health and Indigenous ways of knowing. Lana has 20 + years of experience working in health care as a registered nurse and physician.  She dedicates her practice to revitalizing Blackfoot Health systems. She was fortunate to be raised in ceremony and receive influence and teachings from her late mother Hazel Potts, grandmother Rose Potts and other matriarchs in Blackfoot Territory. As a mother, academic, advocate and role model she has a strong commitment to protecting youth and securing a future for our lookalikes to follow.

Dr. Lana Potts’s “Last To Come In” is a Family Physician who specializes in First Nation Health. Dr. Lana Potts provides primary care at the Siksika Health and Wellness Centre, Niitsitapi Learning Centre, and is the Medical Director at Elbow River Healing Lodge.  Dr. Lana Potts is a charter class graduate of The Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dr. Lana Potts completed her residency training in Indigenous Family Medicine at UBC. She has also completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Distinction at the University of Alberta. Dr. Lana Potts is a member of the Piikani Nation. She was fortunate to be raised in ceremony and receive influence and teaching from her late mother Hazel Potts, grandmother Rose Potts and other matriarchs in Blackfoot Territory. She is married to Robert Benjoe from Muscowpetung First Nation in Saskatchewan and is the proud mother to her daughter Annataki and son Nodin.

Dr. Lana Potts has advocated in many ways on behalf of Indigenous and rural health. Dr. Lana Potts is an Indigenous Child Health Advocate. She has utilized her academic experience in a variety of roles including research on Residential Schools and Tuberculosis. Dr. Lana Potts sat on the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada board for three terms, advocating for the improvement of Indigenous health. Throughout medical school and in her current roles, she works as a liaison with various boards on how to improve healthcare delivery in First Nation and rural communities.  Dr. Lana Potts was a founding member of the Aboriginal Wisdom Council, a provincial board that advises on improving health outcomes in Indigenous communities

First Nations doctor wants more action following summit on anti-Indigenous racism in health care

A two-day virtual summit looking at ways to eliminate anti-Indigenous racism in the health-care system wrapped up Thursday — but one First Nations doctor in Alberta is skeptical it will create real change. "This is the same talk that we had 30 years ago," said Dr. Lana Potts on Friday in an interview with CBC's Radio Active. "But there's really no tangible solutions — there's no metrics to say we're doing better. "I'm not as hopeful as I should be." Hundreds of experts and representatives from federal and provincial governments attended the virtual summit.

A new paper from the University of Calgary began with a simple question: Are Alberta doctors biased against Indigenous people? As she was taking the survey, Dr. Lana Potts, a Blackfoot family physician, worried about the results. "These are people I work with on a regular basis," she said. "I was concerned about the response because it leaves an uncomfortable feeling to hear the truth around what people think of us."

Along with Dr. Lana Potts of the Piikani First Nation, Makokis launched Power of 100, an initiative aimed at getting Indigenous people vaccinated against COVID-19. Power of 100 organizes clinics filled with music, giveaways and Indigenous influencers. "It's essentially Coachella meets your regular vaccination clinic and it meets young Indigenous people where they're at," Makosis said. After events in Alberta, Dr Makokis plans to bring Power of 100 to several Saskatchewan First Nations.
