Work has always fascinated Kristen at an early age. Everything about it intrigues her: the nature of work, the occupations people choose, the role work plays in the contexts of individuals, families, communities and economies. It isn’t surprising that her first job was in career development. As a result, she learned everything she could about the complex decisions people make to create the life and work that they find meaningful and satisfying. She then transitioned into human resources, seeking to understand the organizational side of work. In both areas, she was honoured to connect people with meaningful work. Beyond filling vacancies, it became clear that ensuring retention within organizations was equally important. There seemed no point filling a bucket that had holes in it. This led her to work in performance management, management and supervisory training, and leadership development.

Kristen Cumming has focused the past twenty years on improving the connection between people and their work. Cumming holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Master of Education degree in Workplace and Adult Learning. Kristen Cumming also instructed at the University of Alberta in the Bachelor of Management Business Economics Program for eight years. Over the past 20 years, she has operated a successful consulting practice. She has worked with tens of thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations across North America.

Kristen Cumming’s career is now focused on elevating people in the context of their work. In doing so, she is passionate about supporting the stability, resiliency and performance of individuals, organizations and communities. Kristen specializes in communication, staff retention, performance management, high performance teams, and leadership. As a result, Kristen can incorporate practical and relative solutions for each industry and work relationship. She uses her experiences within her education and her consultation practice in the career development and human resources industry to customize each presentation for each audience. Above all, Kristen has a unique perspective on understanding complex decisions that are made to create the life of work that employees find meaningful and satisfying and delivers powerful presentations that change the way one thinks about careers, organizations and industries.

Topic Presentations

Demography is a powerful tool to explore workforce trends due to its relative stability and predictability. In her presentation, The Intergenerational Workplace, Kristen shares images that clarify changes in population that define each generation. She discusses the differences in characteristics, values and learning patterns of each generation. This is most powerful with a significant amount of audience participation, and works very nicely in both large and medium scale presentations.

The strength that Kristen offers is the ability to weave together the numbers and the stories of different generations, to provide a strong learning opportunity for organizations. The fun part is in the qualitative exploration. She discusses the differences in characteristics, values and learning patterns of each generation. This presentation illuminates the  experiences, expectations and behaviours of different generations in the workplace and offers useful ideas to increase collaboration, communication, and performance between generations at work.

Kristen's exploration of the North American demographic landscape focuses on real stories of shared experiences within the social and economic context of each generation. This landscape pattern is proven through technological, economic and social trends that surface in our everyday interactions at home or at work.

This talk illuminates techniques that support business leaders make powerful, resonant change rapidly within an organization. Whether change includes new products, customers, project management, structure, or culture, the HOW of achieving sustainable change is often confounding. It is clearly necessary to align business leaders and their reports around the WHY (vision), and articulate the WHAT (mission / strategy), however the HOW of change is a function of modifying the collective habits currently entrenched within the organization. This talk will explore proven methodologies  and techniques and the role of leadership in defining and supporting collective habits of execution to improve business results.

One of the most predictable forces of change facing organizations now is that change itself is happening at an increasingly rapid pace. Organizations are challenged to keep pace and make decisions with both agility and clarity to remain competitive in an increasingly turbulent business environment. This is the time to engage the breadth and depth of the learning capacity within an organization. Leading, therefore, must be centered on the ability to steward the learning of teams and individuals. This session will share a model of organizational learning and techniques to both foster and steward organizational learning and remain competitive through the turbulence of change.

Learn useful techniques to maintain productivity, morale and interpersonal harmony while addressing conflict and difficult conversations at work.
