SABRINA CRAIG BIOGRAPHY

Sabrina Craig is a director of Vaccine Hunters Canada, an organization in pursuit of connecting Canadians across the country with information and access to available vaccine appointments. Working as a technical analyst at BMO full time, Sabrina made it a goal of hers to spend more time volunteering in 2021. With the pandemic still ever present, a sense of urgency surrounded getting Sabrina’s parents — who are both immunocompromised — and herself vaccinated, but access to appointments, information, and answers proved difficult. Sabrina was ranked as #1 most influential Torontonian by Toronto Life Magazine in 2021, was recognized as a Canadian Top 25 Women of Influence in 2022 as well as the Chatelaine magazine “woman of the year” and winner of the Doris Anderson award.

Her and her co directors at Vaccine Hunters Canada (VHC) created a large community based volunteer network dedicated to connecting eligible Canadians with vaccination appointments. The volunteer-run organization grew at an incredibly rapid pace; over 100 volunteers across Canada were sourcing appointments, sharing the availability of doses, and answering questions people had about the vaccine. At Vaccine Hunters, Sabrina build relationships with pharmacists and doctors who have vaccination events, and that’s also where a lot of the rural communities are getting vaccinated from. She helped develop a system where pharmacists can submit information to them, about vaccine availability and doses, which they then blast out, to try to get as many people vaccinated as possible, and prevent vaccine waste. Beyond correspondence with pharmacists, Sabrina is now liaising directly with corporate head offices of all major pharmacies.

The Vaccine Hunters Canada community of volunteers and social media followers — which at its peak, was almost 430,000 in total across their platforms — has helped hundreds of thousands of Canadians get educated, and most importantly, receive their vaccinations. Sabrina Craig scaled the organization to a management team of 150+ people, and 400,000+ followers across Canada, on Discord, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, NextDoor, and TikTok.  All in six months, all with volunteers (including herself), and all with no corporate or government funding. Millions of people have used VHC and their tools to find their vaccinations. The founders estimate they helped some 1.2 million Canadians find vaccine doses.

It’s inspiring to see how the group came together, and how much impact they’ve had on helping Canadians, and saving lives. “We’re incredibly humbled to be part of this and we’re excited to be able to help even more people,” says Sabrina, who shares how it’s been a priority to ensure that the volunteers are representative of different age groups, demographics, and can speak a variety of languages to be able to connect with all Canadians and people around the world. Sabrina Craig is also working with other countries and NGOs to develop and empower grassroots movements, under the brand VaxiNations.org. Sabrina Craig is currently working with, mentoring, or in discussions with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, Engineers without Borders, Rwanda, Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh

It’s been less than three months since Vaccine Hunters launched in Canada, but it’s been a life-changing experience for Sabrina, who has learned a lot. When I ask her what the biggest lessons have been, she responds with sound advice that can be applied to any grassroots movement, workplace, or family life: “Always readjust your approach and don’t be afraid to try new things. And really it’s all about meeting people where they are, and encouraging the positive forward momentum.”
