BRET HART BIOGRAPHY
Bret Hart, famously known as “The Hitman,” was born on July 2, 1957, in Calgary, Alberta, into the legendary Hart wrestling family. His father, Stu Hart, was a pioneering wrestling promoter, respected trainer, and a recipient of the Order of Canada. Growing up as one of twelve children, Bret’s early life was immersed in the world of wrestling, with intense training under his father in the notorious Hart Dungeon—an environment that emphasized toughness, discipline, and technical precision.
In 1984, Bret joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), forming the Hart Foundation tag team with Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart. Initially known for his tag team prowess, Bret gradually emerged as a singles competitor, captivating fans with his blend of meticulous in-ring psychology, crisp execution, and genuine character. After turning face in 1988, his career skyrocketed. Over the years, he secured five WWF Championships, two WCW World Heavyweight titles, and an impressive 17 world championships overall. He also earned major accolades including the 1994 Royal Rumble co-victory and was a two-time King of the Ring winner.
Known as “The Excellence of Execution,” Bret’s matches became timeless classics. His encounters with legends like Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, and the British Bulldog remain defining moments in wrestling history. His submission match with Austin at WrestleMania 13 in 1997 is widely considered one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time and earned a WWE “Immortal Moment” honor for its intensity and storytelling.
Outside the ring, Bret Hart made significant contributions as a writer and public figure. From 1991 to 2004, he penned a popular weekly column for the Calgary Sun, offering candid reflections on the wrestling industry. In 2007, he released his acclaimed autobiography Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling, which received the Wrestling Observer’s Best Book award for its honesty and depth. He has also appeared in various television shows and documentaries, often portraying wrestling with a realism that few others have achieved.
In 2002, Bret suffered a major stroke, resulting in temporary paralysis on his left side. Through sheer determination and a rigorous rehabilitation journey, he made a remarkable recovery. In 2016, he overcame another battle—prostate cancer—demonstrating once again his unmatched resilience. In 2023, he launched Hitman’s Bar in Calgary, blending hospitality with his iconic wrestling legacy.
Bret now speaks publicly on themes of leadership, adversity, and personal performance. He draws from wrestling metaphors—like preparation, timing, and mental strength—to connect with business leaders, athletes, and community groups. He champions values such as discipline, support systems, and lifelong growth, making his story relatable to anyone facing pressure or personal trials.
Today, Bret Hart remains deeply involved in charitable initiatives, particularly around stroke recovery and cancer awareness. He was recently honored with induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame and continues to inspire through mentorship, storytelling, and personal appearances.
