BRIGETTE LACQUETTE BIOGRAPHY

Brigette Lacquette made history as the first First Nations woman to suit up for Team Canada in hockey at the Olympics. A member of the Cote First Nation, she once played for Yorkton at the Saskatchewan First Nations Winter Games.Brigette Lacquette, 25, is a member of Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan. Lacquette is the 1st First Nations woman athlete to ever be selected for Canada's women's Olympic hockey team. She says watching Nunavut's Jordin Tootoo play for Team Canada in the 2003 World Junior Championships was an inspiration.

She’s an athlete who’s achieved many firsts. The first First Nations hockey player named to Canada’s National Women’s Team, Brigette Lacquette helped Canada win a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeong Chang Olympics. In 2021, Lacquette became the first Indigenous woman to scout for an NHL team, the Chicago Blackhawks. Now, at age 30, working as an NHL scout, public speaker and player with the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association, Lacquette shares both her strengths and vulnerabilities.

Lacquette was introduced to hockey at the age of four. There were no arenas in close proximity to Mallard therefore, Lacquette’s father built an outdoor rink for his daughter (Bennett, 2022). At the age of five, Lacquette’s love for hockey grew and her family committed to driving over an hour to play organized hockey (Bennett, 2022).
