SUSAN EATON BIOGRAPHY
Susan Eaton is a geoscientist, science journalist, and conservationist, exploring the world’s oceans—from Antarctica to the Arctic—in the snorkel zone, a unique land-sea-ice,-air interface where charismatic animals and snorkelers comingle. Susan studies the intersection between geology, glaciology, plate tectonics, oceanography, climate, and life.
During the past decade, Susan Eaton has participated—as a geoscientist, journalist, and polar snorkeler—in eight science-based polar expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands, Canada, Greenland, Norway, Svalbard, and Iceland. In 2014, Susan founded the multi-year Sedna Epic Expedition as a vehicle to increase the percentage of women participating in polar science and exploration.
Comprised of Indigenous and non-Indigenous women ocean explorers, scientists, artists, moviemakers, photographers, historians, educators, and scuba divers, the Sedna Epic’s mission is to scout, document, and record disappearing sea ice in the Arctic. To date, more than 80 Indigenous and non-Indigenous sea women—ranging in age from 16 to 78 years—have participated in Sedna’s four ocean research and polar dive and snorkel expeditions to Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Norway.
Working at the grassroots, Sedna’s sea women have delivered their innovative ocean knowledge-sharing and mobilization programs to more than 1,000 Inuit youths, girls, and elders in remote communities in Canada’s Arctic (Nunatsiavut and Nunavut) and western Greenland.
Sedna’s leadership programs for women and girls have created safe spaces for them to flourish, gaining invaluable experience in ocean research and dive and snorkel expeditions in hostile environments. In 2021, Susan was named to The Explorers Club inaugural Explorers Fifty People Changing the World that You Need Know About. The 50 explorers represent a diverse range of scientific work and backgrounds, with over 46 countries of work represented from 17 countries of residence.
In 2020, Susan Eaton was inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame, and she became a Woman of Adventure with Garmin International. Ocean Geographic named Susan one of the “Ocean’s Best” 18 most influential women leaders in ocean conservation in 2018. Susan is a Fellow International of the Explorers Club and a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (the ‘RCGS’).
In 2015, the RCGS named Susan one of Canada’s top 100 modern-day explorers and trailblazers. A year later, the RCGS named her one of Canada’s greatest 25 women explorers.
A professional geologist and geophysicist, Susan has enjoyed a successful career in the Canadian energy sector, attaining the position of VP Exploration in several junior oil and gas companies, and General Manager Canada of Gaffney, Cline & Associates, an international energy advisory firm and a division of Baker Hughes Company.
In 1999, she founded SR ECO Consultants Inc., a strategic media and energy advisory services firm. Susan also works as an expert witness in litigation in the energy sector. She is registered as a professional geoscientist with NAPEG, the Northwest Territories Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists.
Equipped with a journalism degree, Susan began her media career as an on-camera news reporter with CBC-TV. A seasoned communications and external relations specialist, she provides strategic communications and marketing advisory services to government agencies, Indigenous organizations, industry associations, corporations, and non-profit organizations.
As a freelance writer, she reports on science and technology, energy, natural resources, the environment, water, business, space, geo-tourism, and adventure travel. Her photos and articles have appeared in Business Edge Magazine, Alberta Oil Magazine, the Financial Post, Popular Mechanics, New Technology Magazine, Water Canada Magazine, Outpost Magazine, Canadian Geographic Magazine, Ocean Geographic Magazine, EXPLORER Magazine, ALERT Diver Magazine, DIVER Magazine, the Vancouver Sun, the Calgary Herald, and Edmonton Journal.
Susan Eaton has spent 30 years volunteering in the conservation sector and is a member of the board of directors of Nature Canada, the oldest conversation organization in Canada.
Susan holds a B.Sc. Honours (Geology & Biology) from Dalhousie University (1980), a B.J. (Journalism) Honours from Carleton University (1987), and an M.Sc. (Petroleum Geology/ Geophysics Specialization) from the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, University of London (1988).
