BRAD GUSHUE BIOGRAPHY
Brad Gushue is a Canadian curler from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador who became an Olympic champion and one of the most decorated skips in Brier history. Born Bradley Raymond Gushue on June 16, 1980, he earned Olympic gold in 2006 and Olympic bronze in 2022.
He rose to prominence with teammates Russ Howard, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab, and Mike Adam by winning the 2006 Winter Olympics final over Finland 10–4. Later, he returned to the Games in 2022 and secured the bronze medal for Canada. Gushue is also a World Men’s Curling Champion, capturing the 2017 title with Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant, and Geoff Walker after an undefeated round robin and two playoff wins over Sweden’s Niklas Edin. The following year, he earned a silver medal after falling to Edin in a rematch of the championship final.
Brad Gushue is a record six-time Brier champion skip, claiming titles in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024. His first win in 2017 ended a 41-year Brier drought for Newfoundland and Labrador. At the 2018 Tim Hortons Brier, Gushue broke the record for game wins as a skip with his 114th career victory at the event. Brad Gushue’s first Brier win as a skip dated back to March 1, 2003. As a junior, he won six Newfoundland and Labrador provincial titles between 1995 and 2001, the last five as skip. He earned Canadian junior bronze in 1999, silver in 2000, and captured both the 2001 Canadian Juniors and World Junior titles, after previously serving as alternate for John Morris at the 1998 World Juniors. After transitioning into men’s competition, Gushue qualified for his first Brier in 2003 with a 6–5 record and improved to 8–4 in 2004. By 2005, he returned with another 6–5 finish before restructuring his team in preparation for an Olympic run.
In May 2005, Brad Gushue added veteran Russ Howard to the team, with Mike Adam stepping aside to strengthen their Olympic chances. The move proved successful, as the rink won the 2005 Canadian Olympic Trials and went on to capture gold in Turin. Following the Olympics, Gushue led teams through years of lineup changes and continued to build a reputation as one of the most consistent skips in Canadian curling. He experimented with combinations including Chris Schille, Ryan Fry, and Randy Ferbey, before eventually forming the successful quartet with Nichols, Gallant, and Walker.
Throughout his Brier career, he experienced near-misses, including runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2016, before his long-awaited championship breakthrough in 2017 on home ice in St. John’s. That victory was followed by back-to-back titles as Team Canada in 2017 and 2018. His dominance continued with further titles in 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024, equalling the all-time record for Brier wins held by Randy Ferbey, while teammates Nichols and Walker also matched that achievement. His consistency at the national level has made him one of the most enduring figures in Canadian curling.
On the world stage, Brad Gushue and his teammates won the 2017 World Men’s Curling Championship, followed by a runner-up finish in 2018. Their Olympic bronze medal in Beijing in 2022 further cemented their place among Canada’s most successful curling teams. In addition to his Brier and World Championship success, Brad Gushue has accumulated 15 Grand Slam titles. Highlights include completing the career Grand Slam in the 2015–2016 season and becoming the first skip since Kevin Martin to win three Slam events in a single season. His most recent victory came at the 2024 Players’ Championship.
Beyond team competition, Brad Gushue has also competed in mixed doubles, finishing as runner-up at the 2018 Canadian Olympic Trials with Val Sweeting. Brad Gushue later partnered with his daughters Hayley and Marissa in provincial mixed doubles championships, earning silver medals in both 2020 and 2024. Over more than two decades at the top of Canadian curling, Brad Gushue has demonstrated remarkable resilience, consistency, and leadership. With Olympic medals, a world title, multiple Brier championships, and a decorated Grand Slam record, Brad Gushue has firmly established his place among the greatest curlers of all time.
