CHIEF R. STACEY LAFORME BIOGRAPHY

Chief R. Stacey LaForme is the former Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and a respected voice for reconciliation, leadership, and environmental stewardship in Canada.

Born and raised on the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation territory, Chief LaForme began his leadership journey when he was first elected to Council in 1999. Over the course of more than two decades, he served seven terms, guiding initiatives that strengthened cultural identity, governance, and community engagement.

During his tenure as Chief, he prioritized open communication between elected Council and members living both on and off reserve. His leadership was grounded in respect, collective responsibility, and a vision for an inclusive and sustainable future.

Chief LaForme played a pivotal role as Chair of the Pan Am Games Secretariat, where he secured recognition for the Mississaugas of the Credit as the first official Host First Nation of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. This milestone elevated Indigenous representation on an international platform and underscored the importance of partnership and visibility for First Nations communities.

Throughout his career, Chief LaForme has been a committed advocate for protecting the environment and advancing reconciliation through education and dialogue. His environmental philosophy reflects a deep respect for Mother Earth and emphasizes the shared duty to preserve the planet’s well-being for future generations.

In recognition of his leadership, Chief LaForme received the 2024 Friend of the Greenbelt Award for his consistent advocacy for environmental, ecological, and cultural preservation. He is also a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal and holds the distinguished title of Honorary Senior Fellow at Massey College, where he joins the Duke of Edinburgh and the Chancellor of Oxford among the few to receive this honour.

Beyond his leadership, Chief LaForme is an acclaimed storyteller and poet whose work brings the values of reconciliation and empathy to audiences across Canada. His writing reflects the Seven Grandfather Teachings and offers insights into human connection, community, and healing.

His celebrated poem “Remember” is featured on the Veterans Memorial and continues to inspire reflection on history, sacrifice, and unity. His poetry collections Living in the Tall Grass: Poems of Reconciliation and Love, Life, Loss and a Little Bit of Hope explore themes of change, resilience, and the human spirit.

Chief LaForme’s storytelling bridges traditional teachings with contemporary understanding, encouraging individuals and organizations to think critically about leadership, responsibility, and belonging. His message focuses on the strength that comes from kindness, humility, and shared purpose.

A lifelong advocate for health and wellness, Chief LaForme promotes daily balance through fitness, reflection, and gratitude. His commitment to personal wellness aligns with his belief that strong leaders must nurture both body and spirit to serve their communities effectively.

Following his retirement from elected office, he continues to guide conversations on environmental consciousness, governance, and Indigenous leadership. Through Sacred Trust Consulting and other foundations, he supports initiatives that foster awareness, mental health, and sustainability.

Chief LaForme’s insights are sought after by organizations, educational institutions, and policy leaders seeking to advance reconciliation and ethical leadership. His ability to blend historical understanding with forward-thinking dialogue positions him as a respected voice on the future of Indigenous relations in Canada.

Today, Chief R. Stacey LaForme continues to write, speak, and mentor with the same humility and passion that have defined his career. His work reminds Canadians of the enduring connection between people, land, and spirit, offering a vision of reconciliation rooted in respect and collective responsibility.
