Chief R. Stacey LaForme is the former Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, a respected storyteller, poet, and advocate for leadership, reconciliation, and environmental stewardship. Elected to Council in 1999, he served his community for more than twenty years, guiding important advancements in governance and cultural preservation. His leadership raised national awareness through his role in the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, where the MCFN became the first official Host First Nation. Chief R. Stacey LaForme is the former Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and a respected voice for reconciliation, leadership, and environmental stewardship in Canada.
Born and raised on the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation territory, Chief LaForme began his leadership journey when he was first elected to Council in 1999. Over the course of more than two decades, he served seven terms, guiding initiatives that strengthened cultural identity, governance, and community engagement.
During his tenure as Chief, he prioritized open communication between elected Council and members living both on and off reserve. His leadership was grounded in respect, collective responsibility, and a vision for an inclusive and sustainable future.
Chief LaForme played a pivotal role as Chair of the Pan Am Games Secretariat, where he secured recognition for the Mississaugas of the Credit as the first official Host First Nation of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. This milestone elevated Indigenous representation on an international platform and underscored the importance of partnership and visibility for First Nations communities.
Throughout his career, Chief LaForme has been a committed advocate for protecting the environment and advancing reconciliation through education and dialogue. His environmental philosophy reflects a deep respect for Mother Earth and emphasizes the shared duty to preserve the planet’s well-being for future generations.
In recognition of his leadership, Chief LaForme received the 2024 Friend of the Greenbelt Award for his consistent advocacy for environmental, ecological, and cultural preservation. He is also a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal and holds the distinguished title of Honorary Senior Fellow at Massey College, where he joins the Duke of Edinburgh and the Chancellor of Oxford among the few to receive this honour.
