DR. DIANA STEINHAUER BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Diana Steinhauer, Cree, from Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Treaty No. 6 Territory, is a respected educator, scholar, and leader dedicated to advancing Indigenous knowledge, language revitalization, and Treaty education across Canada.

She brings over 30 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and educational administration within K–12 and post-secondary systems. Her leadership reflects a lifelong commitment to integrating Indigenous worldviews into education and governance.

Dr. Steinhauer currently serves as President of Yellowhead Tribal College, an institution grounded in Indigenous knowledge and committed to lifelong learning for First Nations and non-Indigenous students. Her work as a change agent continues to shape culturally relevant education and policy development.

She completed her Doctorate in iyiniw pimātisiwin kiskeyitamowin (Indigenous Peoples Knowledge) at University n Blue Quills, focusing on Indigenous Language Revitalization. Her academic contributions emphasize the restoration of Indigenous ways of knowing and their essential role in shaping self-determined education systems.

Guided by Elders and Knowledge Keepers, Dr. Diana Steinhauer has been mentored in nehiyawiwin (Cree worldviews) and iyiniw pimātisiwin (the original peoples’ ways of life). Her work embodies deep respect for these teachings and a responsibility to pass them forward.

Her approach to education is grounded in the teaching of her late father, pimātisîtotetân kimiyikowisiwininaw, meaning “Let us live life the way our Creator intended us to live.” This principle serves as the foundation of her work in language renewal, governance, and leadership.

Throughout her career, Dr. Steinhauer has advanced Indigenous education by bridging traditional and contemporary systems. She designs and implements curriculum models that affirm identity, restore language, and uphold the spirit of Treaty relationships.

Her extensive experience includes developing and delivering programs that honour Indigenous oral traditions, governance structures, and intergenerational learning. She is known for her ability to connect Elders’ teachings to modern challenges in education and leadership.

Dr. Diana Steinhauer also speaks widely on the Oral Understanding of the Treaty, presenting through workshops and talking circles. Her sessions explore the Cree worldview before the Treaty, the spirit of the Treaty during its making, and the evolving relationship since its signing.

Her work underscores the continuing relevance of Treaty relationships as living agreements rooted in respect, reciprocity, and shared responsibility. Through storytelling and dialogue, she helps audiences understand how these principles can strengthen communities and institutions today.

As a leader and educator, Dr. Steinhauer contributes to reconciliation through education that honours Indigenous rights and responsibilities. Her vision promotes learning environments where language, culture, and governance thrive together.

Her dedication to nehiyawewin (Cree language) continues to inspire Indigenous learners and educators who seek to reclaim linguistic and cultural identity. She advocates for language revitalization as a path to healing, empowerment, and sustainable nationhood.

Dr. Diana Steinhauer’s career reflects a deep alignment between knowledge, community service, and personal purpose. Her influence extends across Canada through her academic work, speaking engagements, and leadership within Indigenous education.

She remains committed to nurturing the next generation of Indigenous leaders, guided by Elders’ wisdom, community collaboration, and a vision for self-determined education rooted in cultural continuity.

Through her life and work, Dr. Diana Steinhauer exemplifies the values of respect, humility, and balance that define Indigenous teachings. Her contribution to education continues to shape dialogue on language, Treaty, and reconciliation for generations to come.
