MEL GRANDJAMB BIOGRAPHY

Mel Grandjamb is an Indigenous business mogul, firefighting hero and cultural guardian, sparking possibility and motivating change. As a former Chief of Alberta’s high-profile Fort McKay First Nation, Mel Grandjamb is a man of action and inspiration, an accomplished business mogul, firefighting hero, cultural guardian and teacher of tradition. Believing anything can happen when you work hard, Mel Grandjamb sparks possibility and motivates change across Canada as a keynote speaker and as a consultant for First Nation communities.

Among his many outstanding accomplishments: Growing a company of more than 600 employees, helping save Grayling Terrace during the Fort McMurray wildfires, successfully lobbying government for the protection of the Moose Lake buffer zone, serving as an Aboriginal provincial hockey coach, and founding Awake Cultural Camp.

In elementary and junior high, Mel Grandjamb took his books to the trapline where he was on his own to learn and study. In high school he endured long commutes and 12-hour days to achieve his diploma. In college he was the only Indigenous student in his program. Mel Grandjamb is a second-generation residential school survivor and faced racism and abuse throughout his youth.

Despite these difficulties, Mel Grandjamb refuses to dwell on the past. After completing his education, he launched a career at Syncrude Canada, later serving two terms as Chief of the Fort McKay First Nation and founding several companies along the way. Mel Grandjamb now has more than three decades of experience in project management, business development, construction engineering and entrepreneurship. Mel Grandjamb has led negotiations with Canada’s top executives, fought legal battles to safeguard his community’s resources, implemented protective measures to regulate community access during COVID-19, and initiated the Fort McKay Group of Companies’ diversification strategy, which included an extensive housing development. His latest passion is the Awake Cultural Camp, which he developed to pass on and preserve traditional knowledge.

The breadth and diversity of Mel’s experience, from his childhood on the reserve to his successful entrepreneurial career and dedication to his community, make him uniquely qualified to lead conversations about perseverance, finding strength within, maintaining tradition while navigating the changes of a modern world, and much more.

With humour and humility, Mel Grandjamb shares his business acumen, generosity and community mindedness, motivating and empowering listeners to take control of their lives and invest in their healing and success.

Opinion: Resource development can be a tool for reconciliation

Calgary Herald

There is no denying Alberta’s oilsands are a key driver of the provincial economy. However, declining prices, increased competition, Mideast tensions, and greater consideration of environmental performance and impacts on Indigenous people all create higher expectations of developers. Canada and the world demand responsible development practices even as Alberta has struggled to tell the complete story of our energy sector.

Opinion: Court decision heralds new chapter in Crown-First Nation relations

Edmonton Journal

Since time immemorial, the Cree and Dene peoples of the Fort McKay First Nation have hunted, trapped, and fished in the lands and waters around present-day Fort McMurray.
