Meaghan Mikkelson is a Canadian ice hockey player, broadcaster, and former member of the Canadian national women’s ice hockey team. Known for her skill, resilience, and leadership, she has represented her country on the world’s biggest stages and contributed to Canada’s legacy in women’s hockey.
Growing up in St. Albert, Alberta, Meaghan Mikkelson developed her skills on the ice from an early age. She represented Team Alberta at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in Bathurst and Campbellton, New Brunswick, where her team finished in seventh place. Mikkelson’s collegiate career saw her join the Wisconsin Badgers, where she quickly emerged as one of the top defenders in the NCAA. In the 2006–07 season, she tied for 11th in the nation with 42 points in 34 games and was second among all defencemen with 1.24 points per game.
During her time with the Badgers, Meaghan Mikkelson was instrumental in helping the team set a school record with 15 shutouts in a season. She also led all WCHA defencemen with 33 points in 28 league games and ranked fifth overall in the conference. Her accomplishments earned her significant recognition in 2007, including being named an All-WCHA defenceman, selection to the All-WCHA First Team, and being honoured as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year. That same season, Mikkelson was also a Top 10 candidate for the prestigious Patty Kazmaier Award.
Meaghan Mikkelson made her debut with the Canadian National Women’s Team at the 2007 Fall Festival, marking the beginning of a distinguished international career. She competed in her first IIHF World Women’s Championship in 2008, representing Canada on the global stage. At the 2010 Four Nations Cup, Mikkelson showcased her offensive skill from the blue line by recording a goal and an assist in the gold medal game against the United States. Her late third-period goal tied the game and forced overtime, helping Canada secure a championship victory.
Her Olympic career stands out as one of her greatest achievements. Meaghan Mikkelson won gold medals at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, later adding a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.Mikkelson also distinguished herself at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, earning the Directorate Award for Best Defender and a place on the Media All-Star Team in 2011. At the 2012 tournament, she recorded three assists in a decisive 14–1 victory over Russia.
In professional hockey, Meaghan Mikkelson began her career with the Edmonton Chimos of the Western Women’s Hockey League before being selected third overall in the 2011 Canadian Women’s Hockey League Draft. She went on to play for the Alberta Honeybadgers, later known as Team Alberta CWHL and then the Calgary Inferno.With the Inferno, Mikkelson contributed to their success at the 2016 Clarkson Cup, recording an assist in the team’s 8–3 championship victory. She was also selected as one of two captains for Team Blue in the 3rd CWHL All-Star Game, marking the first time a team featured co-captains in the event.
Beyond her playing career, Meaghan Mikkelson has built a reputation as a respected broadcaster. She is currently a commentator on Calgary Flames radio game broadcasts and has appeared as an analyst on televised NHL coverage with Sportsnet since 2020. Her expertise and perspective as a former elite athlete have also led her to serve as an ice-level analyst and reporter for the Stanley Cup Playoffs on TNT in both 2022 and 2024. In her personal life, Meaghan Mikkelson married minor league goaltender Scott Reid in June 2011. The couple, who first met at a hockey school in Edmonton in 2007, are proud parents to a son born in 2015 and a daughter born in 2019. Mikkelson’s life outside of competition has also included active involvement in hockey events and Canadian culture. She participated in celebrations at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa, engaging with fans and taking part in community activities such as the NHL Hockey is for Everyone event and the Energizer Night Skate.
In 2014, Meaghan Mikkelson teamed up with her teammate Natalie Spooner to compete in the second season of The Amazing Race Canada. The pair finished in second place overall after winning seven of the eleven legs, and they were voted the fan favourite team of the season. Hockey runs in Meaghan Mikkelson’s family, as her father, Bill Mikkelson, played four seasons in the National Hockey League with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders, and Washington Capitals in the 1970s. Her brother, Brendan Mikkelson, was a second-round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, won a Memorial Cup with the Vancouver Giants, played five NHL seasons, and later joined the Cardiff Devils in the Elite Ice Hockey League.
Her family’s legacy in the game extends further through her great uncle, Jimmy McFadden, who won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1948 and the Stanley Cup in 1950.
