Nipawi Kakinoosit Biography

Nipawi Kakinoosit is a Cree governance practitioner, Treaty advocate, and public policy voice from Sucker Creek First Nation in Treaty 8. His work focuses on Indigenous governance, treaty interpretation, Indian Act policy, and Crown Indigenous relations across Canada. Nipawi  Kakinoosit is recognized for more than a decade of applied work involving governance systems, parliamentary engagement, and legislative policy analysis. His approach combines lived experience with practical policy knowledge developed through national and international engagement.

Born and raised in Prince George, British Columbia, Nipawi Kakinoosit became politically active during public opposition to the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline. That experience shaped his long term focus on Indigenous governance, resource policy, and community advocacy. Nipâwi Kakinoosit attended the Native Education College in Vancouver, where he completed his Grade 12 studies and became Vice Chief of the Student Council. During his time there, he also helped establish the NEC Nighthawks Athletics Program and served as the inaugural Women’s Basketball Manager.

Nipawi Kakinoosit began speaking publicly at colleges, universities, and community forums throughout British Columbia on Indigenous civic engagement and Indigenous youth leadership. His presentations addressed treaty rights, governance systems, and Indigenous community realities. In 2013, Nipawi Kakinoosit organized and led a caravan from Vancouver to New Brunswick in support of Elsipogtog and Mi’kmaq land defenders opposing shale gas exploratory activity.
