As a distinguished educational foundation from the University of Calgary and Arizona State University, Dr. Vivian Ayoungman has dedicated over fifty years to various educational roles, from teaching to executive leadership. As the Executive Director of the First Nations Adult and Higher Education Consortium, she significantly contributes to Indigenous education advancement. Her pivotal role in the Digital Preservation of Indian Residential Schools Project exemplifies her commitment to preserving Indigenous history and narratives. Dr. Vivian Ayoungman Biography

Dr. Vivian Ayoungman is a First Nation cultural revitalization expert, Indigenous education leader, and language preservation specialist from the Sayiiks Clan of the Siksika First Nation in Alberta, Canada. She has dedicated more than fifty years to advancing education systems that support Indigenous knowledge, language, and cultural continuity. Dr. Vivian Ayoungman holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and three graduate degrees from Arizona State University, including advanced studies in education and leadership. Her academic foundation has supported a long-standing career across multiple levels of the education system.

Her career spans roles as a classroom teacher, student counsellor, vice-principal, curriculum developer, college administrator, university instructor, and executive director. Each role has contributed to her comprehensive understanding of educational structures and Indigenous learning needs. Dr. Vivian Ayoungman has contributed to education policy and program development through service on numerous boards and committees at local, national, and international levels. She has often served as a founding member, supporting institutional growth and long-term planning initiatives.

She is recognized as a 1992 Woman of Distinction in Education in Calgary and a Distinguished Alumni of the University of Calgary. These recognitions reflect her sustained contributions to education and community development. Her leadership includes her role as Executive Director of the First Nations Adult and Higher Education Consortium. In this role, she supports Indigenous adult education, higher education access, and program development across Canada.

Dr. Vivian Ayoungman has played a significant role in the Digital Preservation of Indian Residential Schools Project. This work includes collaboration with survivors, community members, and researchers to document historical and cultural narratives connected to residential schools. Her efforts in preservation work extend to safeguarding both physical sites and lived experiences, ensuring that Indigenous histories are accurately represented and accessible for future generations. This work integrates technology with cultural preservation.

She has led the development of key educational resources, including the Siksika Language Series Kits designed for elementary learners. These resources support language acquisition and cultural education within structured learning environments. Dr. Vivian Ayoungman also contributed to the development of the Siksika Language App, which organizes language learning under thematic structures for broader accessibility. From 2010 to 2023, she collaborated with Siksika Ceremonial Knowledge Keepers at Old Sun Community College to develop language and culture courses. Many of these courses are transferable to public universities, supporting academic integration.

Her work includes ongoing contributions to the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education as a co-chair and member of the International Coordinating Council. This involvement connects Indigenous education leaders across global networks.
