Taylor Mcpherson Biography

Taylor McPherson, a proud Mi’kmaw woman and member of Miawpukek First Nation in Newfoundland and Labrador, is a national champion wrestler, community advocate, and one of Canada’s most compelling voices on Indigenous sport, wholistic wellness, and youth empowerment. Taylor McPherson’s journey is marked by resilience, athletic excellence, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference, values that have carried her from the wrestling mat to the national stage and into communities across the country.

Growing up in Calgary, Alberta, Taylor discovered wrestling at twelve years old, earning a scholarship to the University of Alberta where she competed as a member of the Pandas wrestling team. It was on those mats that Taylor McPherson built the friendship and partnership with Katie Mulkay that would become the foundation for one of Canadian television’s most celebrated victories. The physical and mental demands of elite wrestling sharpened Taylor’s endurance, focus, and ability to stay resilient under pressure, skills that proved invaluable when she and Katie competed on The Amazing Race Canada Season 10.

Alongside Katie Mulkay, Taylor McPherson captured the hearts of Canadians as the second all-female team in the show’s history to secure the title, demonstrating her core values of teamwork, leadership, and purpose. Taylor holds both a Bachelor of Kinesiology and a Master of Science from the University of Alberta, where her graduate research explored women’s menstrual health in wrestling through Indigenous knowledge systems and methodologies.

Taylor McPherson’s MSc research was guided by Elders and grounded in the knowledge systems honouring mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, a holistic framework she carries into every presentation, workshop, and community program. As Sport Program Coordinator at the Indigenous Sport Council of Alberta, Taylor McPherson leads free and low-cost programming for Indigenous youth, women, girls, and Two-Spirit people, connecting communities to sport, wellness, and leadership development.

Taylor co-founded SHED, the Spiritual Holistic Exercise Den, a self-sustaining program she developed with fellow university students to bring sport equipment and leadership training directly into Indigenous communities, fostering self-development, cultural connection, and employment opportunity. Taylor McPherson has served as Head Coach of Team Alberta’s women’s wrestling program at the Canada Summer Games, returning to the land of her Mi’kmaw roots in Newfoundland, and helped restore wrestling to the North American Indigenous Games for Team Alberta.

Taylor carries a Cree name gifted by her relations in Treaty 6, Wapikihew Iskwew, White Eagle Woman; a name that speaks to strength, grace, and the responsibility to lead with purpose. In January, Taylor McPherson begins her PhD at the University of Calgary, continuing to build the research and tangible programming needed to expand SHED into rural Indigenous communities across Canada.

Taylor McPherson’s accolades are not merely trophies, they are symbols of her hard work and passion for social change, opening doors that allow her to advocate for causes close to her heart and inspire young Indigenous people to pursue their dreams. From athlete to national champion to advocate, Taylor McPherson delivers keynote presentations, workshops, and fireside chats that give audiences more than inspiration, a real framework for what it means to belong, to heal, to lead, and to show up whole.
