KATRINA KASTNER BIOGRAPHY

Katrina Kastner had always struggled with mental health growing up. She was never really comfortable in her own skin and found herself isolated from many of her female peers due to her interest in sports and competition. In an attempt to fit in, she tried to change herself.

High school brought another challenge as Katrina Kastner faced cyberbullying, exacerbating her mental health issues. This difficult period led to the development of an eating disorder. At the age of 17, she left home for university, experiencing independence for the first time. During her second year, severe panic attacks manifested, marking a low point.

One particularly intense panic attack in her dorm made Katrina realize she had hit rock bottom. Seeking help, she reached out to her doctor and support system. Her parents visited, and together, they devised a plan of action. Visiting her family doctor led to counseling and medication for her anxiety.

Over the next one to two years, Katrina Kastner embarked on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Diagnosed with anxiety and depression, she acquired the tools to navigate through these challenges. Learning about anxiety, a topic seldom discussed in her life, brought color to her world after living in grayness. Medication, counseling, and a strong support system transformed her life.

Throughout this period, Katrina Kastner learned and continues to learn every day. Advocating for mental health awareness, particularly among her university peers, became her passion. Her transformative experience ignited a desire to create spaces where mental health could be openly discussed, similar to physical injuries or illnesses.

Researching how anxiety manifests in high achievers, a role she had assumed her entire life, revealed the reasons behind her constant burnout. Katrina also discovered the importance of empathy, resilience, and advocating for better mental health support. She believed that the resources available to her during her lowest point saved her life.

Despite her past struggles, Katrina couldn’t have imagined participating in the Amazing Race Canada at that point in her life. Actively working to raise awareness for mental health and promoting positive self-esteem, she championed vulnerability and aimed to create understanding and safe spaces for those struggling with mental health.

Katrina’s compelling journey is a testament to the power of resilience and overcoming self-doubt. Through her experiences, she champions the cause of self-acceptance, particularly for those grappling with mental health challenges, body image issues, or navigating the complexities of being anxious achievers. Katrina Kastner underscores the importance of understanding empathy and creating safe spaces for open conversations, advocating for the transformative power of vulnerability and dialogue. Her story is a catalyst for breaking the stigma surrounding what depression or anxiety “looks like,” a struggle she intimately understands as a high achiever with high-functioning anxiety. Empowering others through shared experiences, Katrina actively works to create safer spaces for discussions and growth, challenging individuals to push beyond their comfort zones for transformative personal development.
