JIM BRAYSHAW BIOGRAPHY

Jim Brayshaw is a former Fire Fighter, Fire Captain, and a leader in mental health education and support. He has partnered with local, regional, and global organizations to develop and deliver mental health strategies and programs that foster wellness and a culture of psychological health and safety. Brayshaw’s supportive work has been instrumental in enhancing hope, vulnerability, trust, and restoration in those experiencing life in ways that can overwhelm.

Jim Brayshaw shares concepts gained through decades of working in Mental Health education with diverse groups. Including work in Resilient Minds training For Firefighters, Critical Incident Stress Management, Peer Support Team development, and Leadership training. He has enjoyed years of collaborative work with his partner Angellah, providing Wellness and Psychoeducational programs such as Sask Mental Health Training & Supports.

His sessions compel companies and individuals to grow their capacity to cope with the psychological impacts of the workplace. Jim’s presentations move audiences toward improved peer support and deepening relationships with self and others. His Artful Communication strengthens groups who work with high levels of stress and potential trauma in their work. Groups such as Healthcare professionals, Community Organizations, Business Leaders, Safety professionals, Executive Teams, and First Responder organizations are motivated to restore their intention to care for each other and for self. Audiences have benefited from Jim’s genuineness and engaging energy.

Jim’s honest, respectful, and kind communication skills are brought to the stage and have been tested in the most difficult arenas. Arenas such as sitting around the Firehall Coffee table. An environment that is an intense communication training ground where ego loves an audience. Jim Brayshaw shares with audiences how the combination of ego in a workplace or personal social settings, often lends to the misuse of social influence and results in a colleague being in an unsafe space, only to become a target of teasing and indignity.

Providing the framework for a safe, thoughtful, and comfortable audience experience is a tenet of Jim’s work. He collaborates with the audience and emanates genuineness as your facilitator, particularly with topics that can feel unsafe and uncomfortable. His presentations bring audiences the welcome experience of making every room a safer and more supportive place for humans. Sessions with Jim result in participants being motivated to come alongside each other and focus on building trust and improving wellness.

From designing educational programs that promote improved emotional and mental health, to working alongside large and small audiences, Jim Brayshaw has moved the chains ahead for better social connections. His edutaining and science-explaining style, bring understanding to why we may feel and think in ways that cause uneasiness and distress. Brayshaw is committed to giving his audiences a powerful model for thoughtful support through early intervention. He has found that if we can learn “Why” a thing exists, then we can find out “How” to dismantle it and restore the wellness and psychological safety each of us deserves. Whether with audiences or workshop participants, Jim Brayshaw opens pathways to improved emotional and mental well-being, and a psychologically healthier & safer journey through the workplace and in life.

crossing the fire line - risk, reward & trust in the fire service, first responder world, and beyond

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Former Fire Captain, Jim Brayshaw, serves as a Mental Health Educator, Peer Support Team Developer, & Critical Incident Stress Team-builder. In this presentation, Jim Brayshaw digs into the complicated daily risks for Firefighters and First Responders. How I risk my ‘life’ everyday may be related to the exposure from potentially traumatic events, life-threatening situations, moral injury, and human suffering. But psychosocial factors in the day-to-day are being ignored and causing harm to the health and wellness of our people.

In this session we will explore the trust issues, the risk, and the rewards seldom talked about in this industry. Fire Halls and First Responder environments are places where ego loves an audience. At times, in this highly social environment, an employee becomes a target for teasing, ridicule, or degrading comments. This can lead to a loss of motivation for staff to “clock-in”. For decades, Firefighters, Medics, Police Officers, Emergency Workers, and Employees in all sectors, have been shifting toward the end of toxic behaviors and attitudes. This makes way for a workplace committed to caring for each other’s physical & emotional wellness.

In this presentation, we look carefully at this reality to gain insights into restoring true safety in this industry. As well, we identify steps to reverse the epidemic of employee dis-engagement that can be seared into the First Responder workplace. When employees live with psychological risk and see a disconnect in corporate values such as Trust, Integrity, Respect, Courage, & Safety, we can answer the call and find out how to turn this rig around to restore a trusting, safe, psychologically healthy workplace.
