MICHAEL REDHEAD CHAMPAGNE BIOGRAPHY

Michael Redhead Champagne is a prominent Indigenous leader, public speaker, author, and advocate dedicated to fostering a revolution rooted in justice, equity, and love. Born on April 13, 1987, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and a proud member of the Shamattawa First Nation, Michael has emerged as a transformative figure in Canadian society.

Growing up in Winnipeg’s North End, Michael experienced firsthand the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, including poverty, homelessness, and systemic inequities. These experiences galvanized his commitment to community activism and youth empowerment.

At the age of 10, Michael Redhead Champagne delivered his first public speech, challenging prevailing narratives about homelessness and marking the beginning of his lifelong journey as a changemaker. His voice has since become one of the most recognized among Indigenous youth advocates in Canada.

Michael Redhead Champagne is the founder of several grassroots initiatives, including the annual North End Grad Walk and the North End Historical Society, both created to uplift and celebrate his community. He co-founded Fearless R2W, an initiative that supports families involved with the child welfare system, and he serves on the board of the Manitoba Health Coalition.

His work emphasizes the power of Indigenous knowledge systems, incorporating Ininew teachings such as wahkotowin (kinship) and mino-bimaadiziwin (the good life) into community development strategies. Michael Redhead Champagne believes these cultural teachings are essential for long-term, sustainable societal transformation.

As a passionate speaker, Michael Redhead Champagne has delivered talks across Canada and around the world, engaging audiences on topics including leadership, youth empowerment, and community resilience. He has participated in TEDx events, such as “Oppression to Opportunity” and “Street Education,” sharing insights from his lived experience.

He has been featured in various media outlets including APTN’s “Michif Country” and “First Contact,” as well as through podcasts and social platforms where he continues to advocate for systemic change. Michael Redhead Champagne’s communication style is grounded, accessible, and deeply connected to the communities he serves.

As an author, Michael Redhead Champagne published his first children’s book, “We Need Everyone,” in January 2024 with HighWater Press. The book shares the message that all people have a role to play in making communities safe, inclusive, and loving.

He has also contributed written work and commentary to national publications addressing Indigenous justice, youth leadership, and child welfare reform. Through storytelling and education, Michael Redhead Champagne amplifies voices that are often unheard.

Michael Redhead Champagne’s contributions have earned national recognition, including the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Decoration for Outstanding Indigenous Leadership in 2017. In 2015, he was named a TIME Magazine Next Generation Leader for his unwavering commitment to social justice.

He has served on several high-profile advisory committees including the Canadian Urban Institute, Kids Help Phone, and the Bank of Canada’s #bankNOTEable advisory committee, which led to the selection of Viola Desmond for the Canadian ten-dollar bill.

Michael Redhead Champagne’s influence continues to grow through his roles in education, media, and community development. His work bridges generations, cultures, and disciplines in the pursuit of equity, healing, and empowerment.

With a deep-rooted belief in youth leadership and Indigenous resurgence, Michael Redhead Champagne continues to inspire individuals, institutions, and communities to work together toward a future built on understanding, inclusion, and respect.
