STEPHEN HAMMOND BIOGRAPHY

Stephen Hammond is a highly regarded author, speaker, trainer, and consultant specializing in workplace behavior and organizational development. With over three decades of experience, Stephen Hammond has been instrumental in helping companies navigate challenges related to harassment, bullying, discrimination, and evolving workplace dynamics. Stephen Hammond is known for his ability to help workplace leaders identify and address the subtle and often overlooked behaviors that can lead to trouble in the workplace.

Stephen Hammond delivers powerful keynote speeches and training sessions that offer practical, actionable advice to help organizations build more inclusive, respectful, and legally compliant environments. His expertise is rooted in his background as a lawyer, where Stephen Hammond worked in labor and employee relations within both public and private sectors. Although he no longer practices law, Stephen Hammond continues to hold membership with the Law Society of British Columbia, giving him a unique perspective on legal compliance in the workplace.

Stephen Hammond holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Studies from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University. His education, combined with life experiences, has shaped his passion for human rights and workplace behaviors. Raised by his feminist and politically active mother, Gerrie Hammond, Stephen Hammond developed a strong commitment to justice and fairness early in life. A defining moment in his youth came when he was arrested in communist Poland under suspicion of being a spy, which expanded his understanding of human rights and the need for respect in all aspects of life, including the workplace.

Stephen Hammond has authored multiple books, including “The New Norm,” where Stephen Hammond addresses how organizations can manage behavioral changes and avoid legal pitfalls. His speaking career is recognized by the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers (CAPS), where Stephen Hammond holds the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Stephen Hammond has also served as the past chair of CAPS’ National Ethics Committee, reinforcing his credibility and reputation within the professional speaking community.

His approach to training and consulting has continually evolved to meet the demands of modern workplaces. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced many businesses to transition to virtual environments, Stephen Hammond quickly adapted by offering his training online. Stephen Hammond developed the “Respectful Workplace” course, which helps individuals and organizations create inclusive, respectful environments both virtually and in person.

His work continues to impact organizations and leaders across Canada, empowering them to create healthier, more productive work cultures where respect and understanding are at the forefront. His legacy of thought leadership in workplace behavior and communication continues to inspire professionals striving for positive change and better organizational outcomes.

So with all the experts and education, why are some people still allowed to get away with inappropriate behaviours at work? It seems to me that most employees have had some education about bullying and harassment, or what we often call “respectful workplace” training. Yet the questions still...

Stephen Hammond Speaking Testimonials

I’d like to say that I thought the plenary was incredible today. I didn’t have many expectations for Stephen Hammond as I had never heard of the guy until you brought him up in that email, and I’ve never heard him speak. I thought his talk was incredibly engaging and interesting. The way he combined interaction with real-life stories about politicians and business moguls made the talk more relatable and interesting for an engineering student audience. I also like how he gave examples that made us think instead of dwelling on and making us feel incompetent because ‘we’ve done these wrong things too.’ I’ve sat in many class lectures before and I...

After 20 years of public speaker I can say this is the best presentation I have ever had. This is not just for management, but for every human being. One of the issues you discussed was racism. Even though I make an effort not to be racist, I was surprised by terms used casually that have racist meaning. I shall bring the knowledge into my life to make me a better person, not just a better manager.
