Treaty Talk – Uniting Allies for Our Future
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day Training
Discover the untold truths about Canada’s Indigenous peoples and the ongoing impacts of the Indian Act in Dr. James Makokis’ enlightening presentation. Unbeknownst to many Canadians, Indigenous lives continue to be governed by laws dating back to the Indian Act of 1876. Treaties were signed to safeguard the rights and lands of First Nation groups, yet the Canadian government often disregards these agreements. The United Nations has condemned this racial discrimination and called for change. Now, more than ever, we need to address the inequality and racism faced by Indigenous communities, guided by the wisdom and teachings of Indigenous Elders.
Before the arrival of European settlers, Indigenous peoples possessed rich knowledge systems and practices related to land, sciences, mathematics, clans, politics, health, and food security. These systems sustained millions of people for tens of thousands of years. However, colonialism and the Indian Act have severely impacted First Nation access to education, healthcare, clean water, housing, and other essential resources that non-Indigenous Canadians often take for granted. The horrific legacy of the residential school system, which operated from the 1880s to the 1960s, represents a dark chapter in Canadian history where education was used as a tool of oppression.
Today, over 40 First Nation communities still lack schools, and the K-12 completion rate for First Nation students stands at only 49%. The rich tapestry of Indigenous languages, numbering between 52 and 70, is at risk of extinction, with only three projected to survive this century. The impact of colonialism is evident in statistics such as First Nation students being more likely to end up in jail than to graduate high school and suicide rates among First Nations youth is up to seven times higher than among non-Indigenous youth. Shockingly, close to 20% of First Nations communities remain under a drinking water advisory, a problem that has persisted for the past 25 years.
Based on the Makokis’ family short films “Treaty Walk” and “Treaty Talk”, a transformative 14-day journey alongside Indigenous Elders, healthcare union workers, faith community representatives, and others. This inspiring walk, known as “The Walk for Common Ground,” educates and raises awareness about the significance of treaties and Indigenous ways of knowing. By embodying the Natural Laws of Kindness, Honesty, Sharing, and Strength, the participants aim to transform themselves and the communities they encounter along the way.
In his presentation, Dr. Makokis offers valuable insights on the need to pivot from our current path and join forces to combat systemic oppression. He highlights the importance of collective responsibility towards our planet, each other, and ourselves. By cultivating a united mindset of awareness, peace, compassion, and forgiveness, we can work together to create a just and equitable future. Dr. Makokis breaks down barriers, inviting us to embrace a progressive approach to the human experience, where we reconstruct our reality and align our country on all fronts. Dr. James Makokis shares his vision for unity, reconciliation, and justice in a transformative presentation that challenges us all to be allies for a better future.
Unveiling the Truth of Residential Schools: A Journey Towards Reconciliation
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day Training
Before the arrival of European immigrants, Indigenous communities thrived with intricate knowledge systems and practices that sustained their livelihoods for thousands of years. However, Canada’s dark history is intertwined with the residential school system, which oppressed Indigenous peoples through education from the 1920s to the mid-1990s. This system, rooted in colonialism, inflicted deep trauma on generations of Indigenous individuals, profoundly impacting their self-perception and their place within and outside their communities.
The effects of colonialism and the Indian Act continue to hinder First Nation communities’ access to education, healthcare, clean drinking water, housing, and other basic necessities that many non-Indigenous Canadians often take for granted. The recent discoveries of unmarked graves have shed light on the tragic fate of missing children and adults who were never accounted for.
The ongoing search for mass graves reflects the painful truth shared by Indigenous nations and their elders, revealing the loss and suffering endured throughout Canada’s dark history of colonialism and abuse. Families were torn apart, lands were seized, and Indigenous band and family structures were replaced by Western systems and ideologies.
Though the last residential school closed its doors in Canada in 1996, the Makokis family, deeply rooted in Saddle Lake, Alberta, has a direct connection to the Blue Quills Indian Residential School, which operated until 1970. The Makokis family has heard stories from many families within their community, shedding light on the profound impact and darkness surrounding the school’s existence. It was not until 1970 that Blue Quills transformed into an educational center under First Nation authority, marking a significant shift toward self-governance and reclaiming Indigenous identity.
Dr. James Makokis amplifies the voices of elders within his community, sharing their firsthand experiences and the lasting impact of the residential school system on their lives and their communities. By bringing these stories to light, he aims to foster an understanding of how the legacies of discrimination, abuse, and oppression persist in different forms, continuing to marginalize Indigenous populations today.
This presentation delves into the truths of Canada’s residential school system, examining both its historical context and its present-day ramifications. Dr. Makokis invites organizations and individuals to confront this difficult past in order to better comprehend the current reality and to ignite meaningful change for the future. By acknowledging the truth and embarking on a path of reconciliation, we can collectively work towards healing the wounds inflicted by this dark chapter of Canadian history and forge a more inclusive and equitable society.

Keeping Doors Open – Teachers, Students & Education
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day Training
There are many First Nation bands that still do not have schools in their communities. The K-12 completion rate for First Nation students is 49%. The sad fact that First Nation students are more likely to end up in jail than to graduate high school is in large part because of colonialism.
Suicide rates among First Nations youth are up to seven times higher than among non-Indigenous youth. Close to 20 % of First Nations communities are under a drinking water advisory, a state that has remained remarkably consistent for the past 25 years. There are anywhere between 52 and 70 languages indigenous to what is now called Canada (depending on how you count them). Only three are expected to survive this century.
The Makokis family members are strong advocates for educating the Indigenous population as well as educating new allies to learn about Indigenous teachings. They passionately believe that education will change the outcomes for Indigenous peoples. They have all taught at the Yellowhead Tribal College located in Alberta and all have strong ties to their post-secondary institutions to assist them in the delivery of Indigenous courses and knowledge.
It was at Yellowhead Tribal College where Dr. James Makokis and his sister Janice Makokis were taught and mentored by Chief Jim O’Chiese a distinguished professor, ceremonial leader, environmentalist, botanist, forester, medicine person, and teacher. Jim passed on his Ojibway and Cree education to many students, to shape their understanding of medicines, ceremonies, the location and meaning of sacred sites, animal migration patterns, the land, the water, and the cosmos.
Entrusted with this knowledge to pass on to future generations, Dr. James Makokis was able to and continues to utilize these teachings with Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups, to help them understand the differences and shared beliefs between Indigenous and non-Indigenous teachings.
Dr. Makokis helps us understand how to better serve Indigenous communities to access strong education, as well as how to serve Indigenous students to maximize their learning. Education is one of the major factors that will contribute to the success of Indigenous populations.
Dr. Makokis’ talk brings a strategic approach to how one teacher or one student can shape the path and outcomes for First Nation communities and Indigenous populations, one course at a time. Dr. James Makokis also shares his own story within the education system, as although not always easy, he grew to understand the key role it played for his future as well as the impact he can have on others.
This talk helps educators understand their roles in teaching Indigenous youth and providing hope and encouragement along the way. It can also be an inspirational youth and student presentation, to help them understand the importance of education in their lives and their future.
Dismantling Systemic Discrimination – Equitable & Accessible Healthcare
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day Training
The case of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who experienced racism and substandard care in a Quebec hospital, shed light on the entrenched systemic discrimination Indigenous Peoples face within the healthcare system. This discrimination is not limited to small-town hospitals near reserves but extends to major hospitals in urban areas as well.
The effects of colonialism and the sustained oppression faced by First Nations have resulted in the loss of traditional knowledge and access to Indigenous medicines that have been passed down for generations. The breach of treaties forced migration, and suppression of traditional practices have contributed to a lack of health, social, and public services in First Nation communities.
Addressing health inequity and the social determinants of health for Indigenous peoples requires a comprehensive approach that centers on the preservation and promotion of traditional cultures, self-determination through self-governance, and community control over lands, education, and social services.
Dr. Makokis will share firsthand stories and insights gained through treating transgender patients, shedding light on the stigma and discrimination faced by LGBTQ2S individuals in the healthcare system. The intersectionality of racism, gender bias, and systemic discrimination disproportionately affect marginalized populations in Canada, leading to adverse health outcomes and unnecessary loss of lives. These patterns of abuse are consistent with the historical and ongoing systemic oppression faced by First Nations peoples and LGBTQ2S populations.
Dr. Makokis is a passionate advocate for Indigenous and LGBTQ2S peoples within and beyond his medical practice. His innovative approach to transgender and Indigenous healthcare has transformed the lives of high-risk patients and challenged the status quo of current medical practices. Driven by his firsthand knowledge of the unique challenges faced by transgender and Indigenous patients, he brings a new perspective that combines research, patient-focused care, and a commitment to improving health outcomes.
To effect meaningful change, the current healthcare system must prioritize cultural safety, trauma-informed care, and restorative actions when adverse events occur. Adequate financial resources and investments are needed to rebuild and strengthen Indigenous health systems that have been impacted by federal legislation over the years.
It is essential to move away from a fragmented approach to healthcare provision and instead implement quality control measures that ensure equitable care for all. Drawing from his experiences growing up in a segregated First Nation community and his work at the Kehewin Health Centre, Dr. Makokis provides a unique perspective that highlights the history, challenges, and strategies required to improve healthcare practices and delivery for LGBTQ2S and Indigenous peoples.
Dr. Makokis tailors his presentation to address the specific needs and circumstances of each organization and community, offering practical solutions to combat systematic oppression within the healthcare system. Whether focusing on Indigenous health, LGBTQ2S health, or both, he empowers participants with knowledge, insights, and strategies that contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable healthcare environment for all.

On behalf of the Mount Royal Staff Association – Professional Development Committee, we extend our sincerest thanks. Your presentation, Building on Indigenous Values, was a fantastic addition to our PD Days offering this year. Our committee distributed a survey to all attendees that included questions specific to your session; the results are below. 100% of survey respondents who attended your session enjoyed you and the content you provided, over 95% of them learned something new, and over 92% would like to see you return as a speaker for future PD offerings. From the many positive comments, we know that MRU staff really appreciated the knowledge and stories you were able to share....
