AUTUMN PELTIER BIOGRAPHY

Autumn Peltier is a globally recognized Anishinaabe environmental activist dedicated to protecting water and advocating for Indigenous rights. Born on September 27, 2004, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, she is a proud member of the Wiikwemkoong First Nation. Growing up surrounded by the waters of Lake Huron, she learned early on about the deep cultural and spiritual significance of water in Anishinaabe traditions. However, she also became aware of the water crises affecting many Indigenous communities in Canada, where clean drinking water is not always accessible.

Inspired by her great-aunt, Josephine Mandamin—affectionately known as “Grandmother Water Walker”—Autumn embraced activism at a young age. Mandamin dedicated her life to raising awareness about water pollution by walking thousands of kilometers around the Great Lakes. Following in her footsteps, Autumn has become one of the most prominent young voices advocating for water protection and Indigenous sovereignty.

At just 12 years old, Autumn gained international attention when she confronted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at an Assembly of First Nations meeting. She presented him with a ceremonial copper water bowl, a traditional symbol of water protection, and expressed her disappointment over the government’s approval of fossil fuel pipelines, which threaten clean water sources. Her bold stand made headlines worldwide and cemented her reputation as a passionate and fearless advocate for environmental justice.

Since then, Autumn has spoken at major global forums, including the United Nations General Assembly in 2018, where she addressed world leaders about the urgency of clean water access. Her speech, which emphasized the sacred responsibility of protecting water for future generations, resonated with audiences worldwide. That same year, she also spoke at the UN Global Landscapes Forum, reinforcing the critical need for government action.

In 2019, following the passing of her great-aunt, Autumn was appointed as the Chief Water Commissioner for the Anishinabek Nation at just 14 years old. In this role, she represents 40 First Nations in Ontario, working to amplify Indigenous voices in policy discussions about water rights and environmental protection. Her advocacy efforts have played a crucial role in pressuring the Canadian government to take action on long-standing boil water advisories in Indigenous communities.

Autumn’s impact has been widely recognized. She has been nominated multiple times for the International Children’s Peace Prize (2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022) and has received numerous awards for her activism. In 2019, her journey was documented in The Water Walker, a film highlighting her dedication to water protection and Indigenous rights.

As a speaker, Autumn brings an authentic, passionate, and inspiring perspective on environmental justice, Indigenous leadership, and youth activism. She continues to advocate for clean water policies and Indigenous sovereignty while empowering young people worldwide to stand up for their rights and the environment. Through her unwavering dedication, Autumn Peltier is shaping a future where water is respected, protected, and accessible for all.
