Catherine Tait is a media executive with more than three decades of experience across film, television, digital media, and public broadcasting in Canada and the United States. Her career has spanned corporate, nonprofit, and public sector leadership roles focused on media innovation and organizational transformation. Catherine Tait became the first woman to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of CBC and Radio Canada in 2018. She led one of the world’s largest public broadcasters during a period of significant change in audience behavior and digital media consumption.
In this role, Catherine Tait oversaw a national news and cultural organization with an annual budget of approximately 1.8 billion dollars. Her responsibilities included television, radio, and digital platforms delivering content in English, French, and eight Indigenous languages. Her leadership at CBC and Radio Canada emphasized digital transformation, public service journalism, and cultural storytelling across platforms. Before joining CBC and Radio Canada, Catherine Tait co founded Duopoly Inc, an independent film, television, and digital content company based in New York. She served as President of Duopoly Inc from 2002 to 2018. During this period, Catherine Tait led the development and growth of award winning film and television projects. Her work included leading an Oscar winning studio through an initial public offering and subsequent acquisition.
Catherine Tait also co founded iThentic in 2006, a digital content company focused on innovative storytelling and emerging platforms. iThentic received an International Emmy Award for the digital project Guidestones. In 2010, Catherine Tait co founded Hollywood Suite, a Canadian broadcasting service dedicated to curated film content. The service expanded access to Canadian and international cinema through broadcast and digital distribution.
Earlier in her career, Catherine Tait served as President and Chief Operating Officer of Salter Street Films from 1997 to 2001. The company produced nationally recognized television programming and feature documentaries. Her work at Salter Street Films included productions such as This Hour Has 22 Minutes and the Academy Award winning documentary Bowling for Columbine. Her role combined operational leadership with creative oversight.
Following her public broadcasting leadership, Catherine Tait has continued her work in media innovation and digital public infrastructure. She serves as Expert in Residence with New_Public, supporting the development of new digital public spaces. She is also an advisor to Gander, Canada’s first Canadian controlled open social media service. Her current focus includes decentralized social media ecosystems and healthier digital environments for public discourse.
Catherine Tait holds a Diplôme d’Études Approfondies in Communications Theory from the University of Paris II Panthéon Assas, a Master of Science from Boston University’s School of Public Communication, and a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Philosophy from the University of Toronto.
