DR. JEN GUNTER BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Jen Gunter is an OB/GYN and a pain medicine physician. She delves into topics related to sex, science, and social media, occasionally exploring other subjects just for the sake of curiosity. She has earned titles like Twitter’s resident gynecologist, the Internet’s OB/GYN, and a fierce advocate for women’s health. Her entire professional career has been dedicated to the well-being of women.

Dr. Jen Gunter’s mission revolves around improving the quality of medical information on the internet. After personally experiencing the challenges of distinguishing fact from fiction when her own children were born extremely prematurely, she realized that this problem extends far and wide. She empathized with those late-night Googlers who often fall into misleading rabbit holes because she’s been there himself. She couldn’t help but notice the impact of inaccurate information when her patients brought it into her office.

Her journey to provide reliable information began with the authoring of “The Preemie Primer,” a guide for parents of premature babies. As her kids grew older and required less time in intensive care units (a tumultuous few years, indeed), Dr. Jen Gunter shifted her focus to reproductive health, addressing the abundance of dubious information on the internet.

Beyond her academic publications, Dr. Jen Gunter’s writing has graced prestigious platforms like The New York Times, The Cut, USA Today, The Hill, and Self. She was the first to reveal that Dr. Ben Carson had associated himself with research using aborted fetuses, despite his claims to the contrary. Dr. Jen Gunter successfully challenged the Toronto Star when they published a sensationalized piece on the HPV vaccine. She is also the one who spotlighted the misinformation in President Trump’s medical letter.

Her second book, “The Vagina Bible,” was released in 2019 and promptly became a New York Times Instant Best Seller, covering everything she believes women (and men) should know about the lower reproductive tract. In 2021, amid the COVID pandemic, Dr. Jen Gunter released her third book, “The Menopause Manifesto,” which also secured a spot on the New York Times Instant Best Seller list. Her upcoming book, “BLOOD: The Science, Medicine, and Mythology of Menstruation,” is set to be available on January 23rd, 2024.

Dr. Jen Gunter hails from Winnipeg, Canada, and graduated from The University of Manitoba School of Medicine at the tender age of 23, indicating an early start to her journey. In 1995, she completed her OB/GYN training at the University of Western Ontario and later relocated to the United States to pursue a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Kansas. Following the fellowship, she furthered her studies in pain medicine. She proudly holds board certification in OB/GYN in both Canada and the United States. Additionally, she’s board-certified in pain medicine by the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, explaining the numerous letters following his name.

She is a parent to two inquisitive boys who challenge her perspectives and a third child who sadly did not survive childbirth, leaving an indescribable pain. In addition to her human companions, she shares her life with a lab named Hazel and a one-eyed cat named Luna, who often steals the spotlight on her Twitter and Instagram feeds, particularly when she dressed up as a Handmaid for Halloween this year.
