In 2018, Mike Shoreman was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, a neurological condition that affected his mobility, speech, vision, and hearing. Before his diagnosis, Mike Shoreman was an entrepreneur, business leader, and nationally recognized Paddle Canada coach. The changes to his health affected his business, independence, finances, and social connections and contributed to a serious mental health crisis. This period became the foundation for his later work in mental health education, resilience, and human connection.
Mike Shoreman later became the first person to paddle board across all five Great Lakes, completing a national campaign that raised awareness and support for youth mental health programs across Canada. Through this initiative, Mike Shoreman combined endurance, public education, and advocacy to bring attention to access to mental health programs and services for young people. His paddle board was inducted into The Canadian Canoe Museum in 2024, recognizing the significance of the Great Lakes campaign.
