PHIL JEWELL BIOGRAPHY

Phil Jewell’s story and the way he delivers his message are so powerful, raw and real that it is no surprise he has become the sought after, inspirational keynote speaker he is. He uses powerful storytelling combined with practical and simple lessons, learned across countries, continents, and cultures

A graduate of the British Army’s Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst, arguably the world’s best leadership school, Phil Jewell has served with the British, Canadian, and US Army. By his mid-twenties, he was leading soldiers in overseas combat, going on to serve as a senior leader working alongside nations and cultures from around the world. His subsequent journey led him to become an executive in both the provincial and federal governments, as well as an academic leadership instructor, before founding two successful companies, one of which is his own boutique leadership development business.

Phil Jewell is a lifelong learner trying to show up every day. A human, with many flaws and failures that have made him who he is today.

At 26 years old he led a highly diverse, 40-person combat team in Afghanistan, involving numerous high-risk operations. Team members included the world-famous Gurkha’s, as well as soldiers from many different countries and cultures, including Afghanistan and Europe. Recounting stories eternalized through his own journal, these experiences taught him enduring lessons that he has consistently applied in many other industries and aspects of his life.

As a senior leader, Phil Jewell was seconded to the US Army and worked in the Headquarters that was responsible for all operations in the Middle East, including Syria and Iraq. This unique team included soldiers from over 100 different nationalities and cultures, all coming together under a single vision and goal.

In 2014, Phil Jewellwas awarded the Commander of the Canadian Army commendation for leading the training and coordinating the deployment of a 350-person immediate response organization that provided military assistance to the Atlantic Provinces during natural disasters, such as hurricanes and flooding. The commendation stated that “Captain Jewell’s tireless efforts have directly contributed to the success of the unit high readiness preparations and have brought great credit to the Canadian Army”.

After his return from leading soldiers in combat in Afghanistan, Phil Jewell was hand selected to plan and lead an intensive assessment course to select the future leaders of the British Army, including the Gurkha’s, who would deploy on operations. His ability to deliver this unique and intense selection ensured only the most competent leaders would go on to lead in combat.

In 2010, after transferring to the Canadian Army, he was entrusted to lead the training of newly commissioned officers in the Canadian Armed Forces, ensuring they had the correct training and preparation to become leaders themselves,

After leaving the Armed Forces, Phil Jewell took on the responsibility of leading a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the safety and security of all marine transportation in the Arctic Waters, importantly including the Northwest Passage. This complex role involved a very pollical and highly sensitive area of our Canada.

Feeling he’d done all he could as an executive in the Public Service, in 2020, during the height of the pandemic, Phil Jewell co-founded and successfully launched two companies that he still operates with his business partner and wife.

All these experiences have shaped him into who he is today and have led to him being requested to deliver main stage, opening, and closing keynotes, leaving his audience in awe at his unique and fresh message.

Why technical expertise does not equal great leadership with Phil Jewell

Phil Jewell Topic Presentations

serve to lead - a fresh perspective to leadership

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Powerful storytelling combined with practical and simple lessons, learned across countries, continents, and cultures.

We’re all leaders, no matter whether we hold an official leadership position or not, and no one ever passes the course that says that’s it, you’re now a leader. We’re all learning, all growing, all failing.

In “Serve To Lead”, Phil shares his three most important leadership principles, two practical questions any leader should ask, and one thought to ponder.

Phil Jewell will do this whilst recounting his times on patrol in the wadi’s and deserts of Afghanistan and the lessons he learned on the way; ones that had been introduced to him during his training and became embodied during some of the most intense challenges a leader can face.

Subsequently becoming the cornerstone of his leadership, Phil Jewell will share how he has successfully transferred and applied them in his second leadership career outside the Army.

Regardless of the industry or sector, Phil strongly believes his 3-2-1 principles can be, and should be, universally applied. This follows his motto: that leadership is leadership is leadership, and it starts with oneself, regardless of the industry or profession.

    Main takeaways:

    • Three principles we all need to live with, centred around character, trust and owning who we are.
    • Two questions we should all ask daily, focussed on developing those around us and maximising the talents we have.
    • Leave with the one enduring thought that we should all ponder.

are you irrelevant yet?

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Helping organisations maximise talent by encouraging leaders to become more irrelevant by trusting, delegating, and empowering those around them.

Whether serving as a young army officer leading soldiers in combat, working in the public service, or his numerous diverse roles and responsibilities in between, Phil’s signature keynote speech focusses on powerful personal stories from leadership roles spanning countries, cultures, and continents.

His messages centre around one theme – the more irrelevant we can make ourselves the more impact our collective teams can have. He draws out universal lessons to share the key principles, practical questions, and thoughts to ponder anyone wanting to elevate and develop those around them should have.

He does this whilst recounting his times on patrol in the wadi’s and deserts of Afghanistan and the lessons he learned on the way; ones that had been introduced to him during his training and became embodied during some of the most intense challenges a leader can face. These lessons have helped shape him, yet they don’t define him.

He also shares powerful stories and lessons he’s learned on the way, whether working in a fast-food restaurant during high school or trying to be the best parent he can to two wonderful children. What he shares and how he does it is as real and authentic as it gets.

With such broad experience, Phil Jewell bridges the gap from his stories and message to make it resonate with leaders at all levels, across all industries and professions.

    Main takeaways:

    • Uncover the single most important measurement there is to leadership ability and performance.
    • Discover the importance of character and mindset in creating an environment where empowerment and delegation can thrive.
    • Understand how to attach meaning to work.
    • Gain the courage and confidence to be truly authentic and show-up exactly as ones true self.
    • Leave with the one enduring thought that is at the core of everyone’s success.

I have been fortunate to hear Phil Jewell deliver his keynote speech on two separate occasions; once when I was a leader amongst other leaders, and then subsequently when I invited him to speak to my own team. Both times I left feeling inspired, motivated and engaged to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Phil is an excellent storyteller, and does a great job at making an emotional connection with his audience. He’s principles and points are highly relevant to any leader and any team, irrelevant of the profession, and there is not doubt that anyone who hears Phil speak will leave inspired and motivated to be the best version of themselves.

I heard Phil Jewell speak to the peer group I am part of and was so impressed that I invited him to spend the afternoon with my own leadership team. He didn’t disappoint and did a great job at sharing his message in an interactive session that certainly left many wondering how they might adapt and evolve how they show up as a leader. His principles are universally relevant to the newest leader as they are to the most seasoned leader, and he will certainly challenge you to think and see leadership through a different lens. I would highly recommend Phil as an engaging and thought-provoking speaker to help inspire and give your team confidence to face the challenges that lie ahead.
