STEPHANIE DICK BIOGRAPHY

Stephanie Dick is an inspiring speaker, an expert on AI, and a historian of mathematics and technology. For over fifteen years, she has explored what AI is, what it does, and the histories that shape its character and potential today. Stephanie Dick draws from her deep research and award-winning scholarship to provide broad and varied audiences with unique and rare insights into the past, present, and future of AI technology. In a time of rapid change and rampant hype, Stephanie Dick leverages deep understanding of the history of technological development to guide organizations through the technical, managerial, and societal facets of this rapidly proliferating technology. Stephanie Dick inspires audiences to reflect on the deep questions that AI raises for our world, while implementing it in optimal ways.

Stephanie Dick is an incredibly engaging speaker. In her youth, she was one of Canada’s best debaters, placing first in both bilingual and French national tournaments, and having been selected as one of five members of Team Canada in 2002 who competed at the World School’s Debating Championships in Singapore, as well as international tournaments in the UK. Building on her early passion for public speaking, Stephanie Dick now lectures regularly in the university context and offers public talks for a wide array of audiences. She has been invited to speak at big tech firms including Google and Microsoft Research and is regularly invited to participate in policy-oriented events with legislators and representatives of government in the UK, the US, and Canada. She has also presented in arts and culture festivals like transmediale in Berlin and the Prada Fashion House’s cultural event “Prada Mode” in Paris. Stephanie is known for being able to frame complex technical and historical insights in accessible and engaging ways for people of all backgrounds and interests.

Stephanie Dick spent nine years training at Harvard University where she completed her PhD in the History of Science and held a postdoctoral position as a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows. Stephanie Dick took up her first faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017, in the History and Sociology of Science Department. At Penn, Stephanie Dick was also recruited to advise in the MBA/MA Lauder Joint Degree in International Studies program offered through the Wharton School of Business to train future global business leaders and also to lecture and run interactive seminars in the PennCLO, or “Chief Learning Officer” program offering cutting edge academic perspectives to international business executives. In her work at Wharton and the PennCLO program, Stephanie began translating her most important scholarly insights about AI, how it impacts our work, our knowledge, and our approaches to human organization for those seeking to implement new technologies in optimal ways in industry and business while minimizing social harm. Stephanie Dick continues to forge these connections in her capacity as an editor at the Harvard Data Science Review, where Stephanie oversees the publication of a column that frames humanistic insights for data scientists.

In 2021, Stephanie Dick (who was born and raised in Calgary) decided that after thirteen years in the “ivy league”, she wanted to return home to Western Canada to be closer to her family. Stephanie is currently a professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and an active researcher in the Digital Democracies Institute that explores how AI is impacting our society. Stephanie Dick is eager to share her expertise on AI, its place in the future of work and management, and its impacts on the human experience here at home in Canada, or wherever there is a shared interest in this emerging space.

There is a plaque at Dartmouth College that reads: “In this building during the summer of 1956 John McCarthy (Dartmouth College), Marvin L. LA Reviws of Books

COMPUTERS LOOM LARGE in Cold War science fiction. The world of Dune is an outlier. Indeed, it is the absence of such machines — of computers, robots, and artificial intelligences — that defines Herbert’s imagined universe. In the book’s prehistory, a violent uprising called the Butlerian Jihad overthrew sentient machines, and subsequently banned them in the Orange Catholic Bible, which declares “thou shalt not make a machine in the image of a human mind.” In Dune, the artificial intelligence central to so many imagined futures is, then, a relic of the past.

How AI Sets Limits for Human Aspiration

ISSUES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

We are watching “intelligence” being redefined as the tasks that an artificial intelligence can do. Time and again, generative AI is pitted against human counterparts, with textual and visual outputs measured against human abilities, standards, and exemplars. AI is asked to mimic, and then to better, human performance on law and graduate school admission tests, advanced placement exams and more—even as those tests are being abandoned because they perpetuate inequality and are inadequate to the task of truly measuring human capacity.
