Stephanie Dick Biography

Stephanie Dick is an inspiring speaker, an expert on AI, and a historian of mathematics and technology. For over fifteen years, she has explored what AI is, what it does, and the histories that shape its character and potential today. Stephanie Dick draws from her deep research and award-winning scholarship to provide broad and varied audiences with unique and rare insights into the past, present, and future of AI technology. In a time of rapid change and rampant hype, Stephanie Dick leverages deep understanding of the history of technological development to guide organizations through the technical, managerial, and societal facets of this rapidly proliferating technology. Stephanie Dick inspires audiences to reflect on the deep questions that AI raises for our world, while implementing it in optimal ways.

Stephanie Dick is an incredibly engaging speaker. In her youth, she was one of Canada’s best debaters, placing first in both bilingual and French national tournaments, and having been selected as one of five members of Team Canada in 2002 who competed at the World School’s Debating Championships in Singapore, as well as international tournaments in the UK. Building on her early passion for public speaking, Stephanie Dick now lectures regularly in the university context and offers public talks for a wide array of audiences. She has been invited to speak at big tech firms including Google and Microsoft Research and is regularly invited to participate in policy-oriented events with legislators and representatives of government in the UK, the US, and Canada. She has also presented in arts and culture festivals like transmediale in Berlin and the Prada Fashion House’s cultural event “Prada Mode” in Paris. Stephanie is known for being able to frame complex technical and historical insights in accessible and engaging ways for people of all backgrounds and interests.

Stephanie Dick spent nine years training at Harvard University where she completed her PhD in the History of Science and held a postdoctoral position as a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows. Stephanie Dick took up her first faculty position at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017, in the History and Sociology of Science Department. At Penn, Stephanie Dick was also recruited to advise in the MBA/MA Lauder Joint Degree in International Studies program offered through the Wharton School of Business to train future global business leaders and also to lecture and run interactive seminars in the PennCLO, or “Chief Learning Officer” program offering cutting edge academic perspectives to international business executives. In her work at Wharton and the PennCLO program, Stephanie began translating her most important scholarly insights about AI, how it impacts our work, our knowledge, and our approaches to human organization for those seeking to implement new technologies in optimal ways in industry and business while minimizing social harm. Stephanie Dick continues to forge these connections in her capacity as an editor at the Harvard Data Science Review, where Stephanie oversees the publication of a column that frames humanistic insights for data scientists.

In 2021, Stephanie Dick (who was born and raised in Calgary) decided that after thirteen years in the “ivy league”, she wanted to return home to Western Canada to be closer to her family. Stephanie is currently a professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and an active researcher in the Digital Democracies Institute that explores how AI is impacting our society. Stephanie Dick is eager to share her expertise on AI, its place in the future of work and management, and its impacts on the human experience here at home in Canada, or wherever there is a shared interest in this emerging space.

Stephanie Dick Speaking Testimonials

"Dr. Stephanie Dick is a passionate, intelligent, engaging speaker who I cannot recommend highly enough. Her empathy when speaking with workers about the history and impact of new technology and AI helped our attendees feel seen, heard, and better informed in the ever changing world we work in. I look forward to continuing to work with her in the future!"

Hillary Bergshoeff

Assistant Business Representative

"Stephanie, I want to thank you for the session you led in our Penn CLO doctoral program. You didn’t just teach about AI…you actually helped all of us step back and rethink what intelligence actually means, both human and artificial! Your ability to draw from history, philosophy, and critical analysis gave the session real depth, and yet you made it accessible and relevant. Several students commented afterward that your session helped them (and provoked) on how they think about technology and leadership. In a space where AI is often reduced to hype or fear, your perspective brought clarity for our students who look at every session from both a scholar and a practitioner lens."

Dr. Raghu Krishnamoorthy

Director
PennCLO Program

"Stephanie Dick brought a valuable combination of historical relevance, technical clarity, and practical insight to our board’s discussion of AI. She made the complex simple when it comes to what actually matters for long-term value creation: data foundations, governance, and the disciplined integration of human and machine intelligence. Her perspective was thoughtful, grounded, and immediately useful for senior leaders thinking seriously about AI strategy and risk."

Brian Baker

Operating Partner
Brookfield Infrastructure Partners

"What I found most valuable about Stephanie Dick’s presentation was the historical lens she brought to the discussion of AI. By situating today’s technologies within a longer arc of how organizations have tried to formalize judgment, knowledge, and decision-making, she made the current moment far more intelligible. This perspective is especially important for boards, where oversight depends on understanding not just what new tools can do, but how they reshape governance, risk, and accountability. Stephanie’s insights were thoughtful, rigorous, and highly relevant for directors responsible for long-term stewardship."
