THELAND KICKNOSWAY BIOGRAPHY
Theland Kicknosway is a member of Walpole Island First Nation, Bkwejwanong Territory, but he calls the unceded Algonquin Territory of Ottawa home.
Theland Kicknosway is a traditional singer, drummer, grass and hoop dancer, and an active member of Families of Sisters in Spirit. This is a grassroots organization that provides support to First Nation, Inuit, Métis families impacted by missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people. Theland has been advocating for Indigenous communities his whole life.
In the third grade, Theland wrote a letter to his school explaining why an annual pow wow would be an excellent teaching opportunity for the school and community. His pride in his culture and desire to share it resulted in Century Public School celebrating the pow wow annually.
Theland Kicknosway was the youngest Indspire Laureate named for Culture, Heritage and Spirituality in 2018. He has been featured in CBC Arts and CBC News, Flare, Teen Vogue, Complex, and Huffington Post Canada just to name a few. Theland has made a name for himself as a staple in the Indigenous community on TikTok under the moniker @the_land. With nearly 400,000 followers and 9.3 million accumulated “likes”, Theland is an important contributor to #NativeTikTok.
This summer, Theland will embark on his 7th annual Run/Bike for MMIWG2S, “Theland’s Journey.” His journey will begin in Vancouver British Columbia and finish in Gatineau Park, Quebec.
This year’s run across Turtle Island is a long-anticipated dream of Theland’s to raise awareness about violence and injustice, improve the lives of indigenous youth, and lead transformative change for generations to come. In 2017, he completed his third annual 130km run from Ottawa to Kitigan Zibi in partnership with Families of Sisters in Spirit to raise awareness for the children of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
For more than five years, Theland Kicknosway has been a mentor and leader at the KAIROS where he has taught over 1,500 Indigenous and non-Indigenous people about the realities of Indigenous youth in Canada. Theland is also one of the most active facilitators of the KAIROS Blanket Exercise where he educates others about Indigenous culture and history. He also offers a round dance and teachings to LGBTQ2S youth at the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity.
