Andrew Feustel is a former NASA astronaut, geophysicist, and International Space Station Commander recognized for leadership in human spaceflight, scientific exploration, and high performance decision making. During a 23 year NASA career, he completed three space missions, logged 226 days in space, and conducted nine spacewalks totaling more than 61 hours. He served as Commander of Expedition 56 aboard the International Space Station, Deputy Chief Astronaut, and Acting Chief Astronaut. Andrew Feustel Biography

Andrew Feustel is a former NASA astronaut, geophysicist, International Space Station Commander, and aerospace leader whose career spans scientific research, human spaceflight, operational leadership, and global exploration. His experience includes more than two decades at NASA, three space missions, and service in some of the most demanding environments on Earth and in space. Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Michigan, Andrew Feustel developed an early interest in science, engineering, and problem solving. His educational path began at Oakland Community College before continuing to Purdue University, where he earned degrees in Earth Sciences and Geophysics.

Andrew Feustel later earned a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences with a specialization in Seismology from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. His academic background provided a strong foundation in scientific research, data analysis, and technical problem solving. Before joining NASA, Andrew Feustel worked as a geophysicist in Canada, supporting microseismic monitoring projects in underground mining operations throughout Canada and the United States. He later joined ExxonMobil as an exploration geophysicist, managing seismic programs around the world.

In 2000, Andrew Feustel was selected as a NASA astronaut. Following astronaut candidate training, he served in a variety of technical and operational roles supporting space shuttle missions, robotics, space station operations, and astronaut training. Andrew Feustel completed extensive training that included underwater missions, cave exploration programs, polar research, survival exercises, field medicine, aviation operations, and international mission preparation. These experiences contributed to his expertise in leadership, teamwork, adaptability, and performance in high consequence environments.

In 2009, Andrew Feustel flew aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS 125, the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. The mission upgraded and extended the life of one of the most important scientific instruments in modern astronomy. During that mission, Andrew Feustel completed multiple spacewalks while performing critical repairs and upgrades to the telescope. The mission remains one of NASA’s most significant scientific servicing efforts.

In 2011, Andrew Feustel returned to space aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS 134. The mission delivered the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer to the International Space Station and represented the final flight of Endeavour. Andrew Feustel’s third mission began in 2018 when he launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station. He served as a Flight Engineer during Expedition 55 and later became Commander of Expedition 56. As commander, Andrew Feustel led an international crew responsible for scientific research, station maintenance, operational planning, and collaboration among global space agencies. The mission supported hundreds of research investigations and technological demonstrations.

Across his three spaceflights, Andrew Feustel accumulated 226 days in space and completed nine spacewalks totaling more than 61 hours. His accomplishments place him among the most experienced spacewalkers in NASA history. Following his space missions, Andrew Feustel was appointed Deputy Chief Astronaut and later served as Acting Chief Astronaut. In these leadership roles, he helped guide astronaut operations, training, and strategic planning during a significant period of transition in human spaceflight.

Andrew Feustel retired from NASA in 2023 after 23 years of service.
