She is Inland Tlingit and Tagish Khwáan from the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, belonging to the Dakhl’aweidí Clan under the Tagish Keét Hít, or Killerwhale House, in the Southern Yukon Territory.
Marilyn Jensen’s expertise reflects a deep connection to the land, language, and ceremonial practices of her people. Her work focuses on the restoration of Indigenous culture, governance, and knowledge systems that were displaced through colonization. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Alaska and a Master’s Degree in Indigenous Governance from the University of Victoria.
Marilyn Jensen began her career as a researcher with the Council of Yukon First Nations, where she documented stories and oral histories from Elders across the territory. This early work grounded her lifelong commitment to preserving and advancing Indigenous knowledge.
She later co-founded the consulting firm Legendseekers, which provided research, facilitation, and training on Indigenous history, self-government, and cultural competency to governments and organizations across Canada.
As an instructor in First Nation Governance and Public Administration at Yukon University, she has guided countless students through the principles of Indigenous self-determination and community leadership. Her teaching and speaking style are rooted in storytelling and humour, engaging audiences with both cultural authenticity and contemporary insight.
In 2007, Marilyn founded the Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, an Inland Tlingit dance group dedicated to reclaiming and revitalizing traditional dance, song, and regalia. Under her leadership, the group has represented Yukon First Nations internationally in New Zealand, Taiwan, and across North America. The troupe performed at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and for dignitaries including Prince William and Princess Catherine.
The Dakhká Khwáan Dancers received the National Aboriginal Tourism Award and a nomination for an Indigenous Music Award for their debut album Deconstruct/Reconstruct. In 2016, Marilyn Jensen received the Governor General of Canada’s Polar Medal for her leadership in cultural reclamation and the advancement of Indigenous representation.
She continues to work as a consultant and facilitator specializing in Indigenous governance, reconciliation, and community development.
