NOTORIOUS CREE BIOGRAPHY

Notorious Cree, born James Jones, is a Nehiyaw (Cree) performance artist, cultural educator, and advocate from Tall Cree First Nation in Treaty 8 Territory, Northern Alberta. As a multifaceted artist and influential voice, James blends traditional knowledge with modern platforms to share Indigenous culture, history, and values on a global scale. With a combined social media following of over six million across TikTok and Instagram, he uses his presence to uplift Indigenous voices and foster cross-cultural understanding.

James is best known for his mastery of hoop dancing and powwow dance, two powerful art forms deeply rooted in Indigenous tradition. Through these dances, he tells stories of healing, connection, and resilience. His performances skillfully weave together ancestral teachings and contemporary expression, creating a compelling fusion that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds. From cultural events to international stages, James has showcased his art at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Winter Olympics, Juno Awards, Pan Am Games, and Coachella Music Festival. His talent and commitment to culture have brought Indigenous artistry into mainstream visibility, challenging stereotypes and inspiring pride across generations.

Beyond his success as a performer, James is a passionate educator, speaker, and mentor. He travels extensively, delivering workshops and presentations that focus on Indigenous identity, storytelling, and traditional dance. His sessions are particularly impactful for youth, offering a space to reconnect with culture and develop a deeper sense of belonging. With empathy and authenticity, James encourages young people to embrace who they are and to take pride in their heritage. His mentorship helps to foster the next generation of cultural leaders and changemakers.

James is also a dedicated advocate for Indigenous rights and representation. He regularly speaks out on critical issues facing Indigenous communities—such as the protection of land and water, the importance of language and cultural revitalization, and the need for justice and equity. Through his content and community work, he raises awareness and inspires action, combining creativity with advocacy to promote real-world change. He is especially passionate about improving Indigenous representation in media, the arts, and public discourse, ensuring that Indigenous stories are told with authenticity and respect.

His influence extends into television and digital media, where he continues to reach wider audiences. James was a standout contestant on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, introducing national audiences to Indigenous dance styles and cultural expression. He has since been featured in documentaries, media campaigns, and interviews that celebrate Indigenous resilience and excellence.

Through his artistry, education, and activism, James Jones—Notorious Cree—remains a powerful force in the movement to uplift Indigenous voices and preserve cultural knowledge.
