DINA BELL-LAROCHE BIOGRAPHY
Dina Bell-Laroche’s life changed dramatically in 2001 after the death of her youngest sister Tracy. Since then, her journey through grief has inspired her to advocate for a humanistic approach to grief and loss. As a death educator, Certified Thanatologist (CT), grief doula, keynote speaker, and published author, Dina Bell-Laroche’s commitment to help the bereaved re-imagine a new relationship with loss is unwavering. She activates this through trainings, workshops, speaking engagements, Grief Cafés, her weekly newsletter called The Grieving Place, and her book Grief Unleashed: Moving from the hole in our hearts to whole-hearted (2023).
Dina Bell-Laroche completed a cross-country tour over 2023-24, hosting Grief Cafés, book signings and educational workshop to enhance the grief and loss literacy of hospice workers, caregivers, and helping professionals. Dina Bell-Laroche brings a hope-filled perspective to a topic that is too often dismissed, inviting participants to understand and honour their grief. Dina Bell-Laroche volunteers her time with Bereaved Families of Ottawa, Hospice Care Ottawa, Bridge C-14 and the Ottawa Cancer Foundation, bringing hope to the bereaved and the broken-hearted.
Dina Bell-Laroche has held several senior leadership positions through her three decades in Canada’s high-performance sport sector including the Equestrian Canada, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the True Sport Secretariat. Since 2010, Dina has served as a co-Partner of Sport Law, a company that provides legal and leadership support to sport organizations from playground to podium. Dina Bell-Laroche is a certified Integral Master CoachTM and is an accredited Professional Coach in good standing with the International Coaching Federation. In 2019, she enrolled as a thanatology student at King’s University College (University of Western Ontario) where she continues to immerse herself in topics related to social justice, trauma, children and adolescent loss, ethical issues in thanatology, and so much more. Throughout her extensive journey, she has discovered many gems that she is inspired to share with others including building classrooms in Nicaragua, and more recently in Northern Ontario on Treaty 3, in honour of her deceased sister. More recently, she is collaborating with the Ottawa Cancer Foundation to bring the first Wind Phone to Ottawa, a way to provide solace to the bereaved and honour the memory of her deceased father.
Dina’s knowledge runs deep. Her teachings are wise. Her practical way of demystifying a taboo topic will leave you feeling more resourced and less isolated. Her hope is to inspire a healthier way for people to re-imagine a new relationship with loss.

Let’s Talk About Grief: What Leaders Need to Know
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
As leaders, we are often the people others turn to for support when life goes sideways. We are confidants, trusted guides, and strategic partners. We walk alongside others, helping them navigate the turbulent waters of change. As leaders, we have the privilege of connecting with employees, customers, and clients through many different stages and transitions, yet we rarely feel equipped to support them when they are grieving a loss. Life losses accumulate throughout our lifespan and if less unattended, can cause needless suffering, poor performance, absenteeism, and workplace burnout. Grief informed leaders feel confident in their competence, understand how to witness others, and create caring cultures where people feel humanized, not pathologized. This inspiring talk provides new language and a heart centered perspective on the topic of loss, grief, and mourning and how leaders can intentionally create a caring culture where people feel supported when life goes sideways.
Dina Bell-Laroche is a published author, death educator and grief coach with a passion to help people reimagine their relationship with life losses. Following the death of her younger sister Tracy in 2001, Dina has become an advocate for a holistic way of supporting self and other through life transitions. As an Integral Master Coach, Certified Thanatologist, author and speaker, Dina invites us to reimagine a new relationship with life losses.
Stop Making My Grief A Problem to Fix: Learning How to Walk Alongside the Bereaved and the Broken-hearted
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
Have you ever suffered a life altering loss? Have you stumbled your way through a conversation, trying to comfort someone who is grieving? Do you find it difficult to talk about dying, death and bear witness to human suffering? Most people find these topics challenging, complicated and awkward. The good news is that we can grow our capacity to better support self and others through difficult times by learning grief and loss literacy.
Dina Bell-Laroche is a published author, death educator and grief coach with a passion to help people reimagine their relationship with life losses. Following the death of her younger sister Tracy in 2001, Dina has become an advocate for a holistic way of supporting self and other through life transitions. Dina has spent over three decades serving in Canada’s high performance sport system, attending 5 Olympic Games and providing leadership support to executives, athletes, coaches and volunteers. Dina has used her lived experience in sport to inspire audiences to re-imagine a new relationship with life losses. She shares her grief wisdoms through stories and anecdotes of those that have grappled with their grief, including athletes who have had to reconcile losses related to injury, teammates not making the Olympic team, and the tragic death of teammates. Through her companioning model, Dina inspires us to become more skilled and present when faced with adversity and leaves us feeling more confident to bear witness to others.
From Death Denying to Life Affirming: Learning the A B Cs and 123 of Grief and Loss Literacy
- Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
Our current culture is grief and mourning phobic, not inviting people to recognize, honour, and express their grief. This translates to the work world where employees are often encouraged to stay strong, be brave, and focus on the future, despite the grief many of them feel after poor performance, death of loved ones, not achieving stated goals, or moving through various transitions in their career. This form of denial can result in unnecessary anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and burn-out. As the current bereavement model often pathologizes grief, many are left floundering as they attempt to navigate the wilderness of their grief. By not inviting leaders to acknowledge the pain of their loss, we fail to help them move through their grief in a healthy manner. We must do better.

Dina Bell-Laroche Speaking Testimonials
Dina Bell-Laroche, just thanks for helping me. The light shone through just a crack and with that light a bit of happiness, something that had been missing for a long time. I have promised myself to be kinder and gentler to myself and to listen, hear others grief. There is so much grief in my world of sports. There is so much work still to be done.
Having the language to make sense of the complexity of sports and life is a powerful tool. Dina Bell-Laroche has helped me understand the mechanics of grief, which has allowed me to process some of the negative moments I’ve experienced throughout my career in sports.
Mark de Jonge
Dina Bell-Laroche’s presentation on grief and loss literacy was engaging, informative, and supportive to frontline professionals who deal with grief both professionally and personally. Her exploration of self-care as an ethical imperative, how we can be disenfranchised grievers when wearing our professional hats, and how to think about grief in ways that can be more supportive to ourselves and clients (in a society that often can be dismissive), offered new perspectives and important food for thought on these topics. I would recommend it to all my colleagues.
Carlie Graef (She/Her) from Hospice Yukon
Like fish who don’t see water because they live in it, we all live in our experience of grief. A little distance from my experience, backed by some learning from Dina Bell-Laroche about how grief manifests in my life, has been illuminating for my own self-development and self-understanding. Dina Bell-Laroche is a gentle presence, and her knowledge can help us all. As she often says: Grief work, works! This s not just words, it has also been my experience.
Trudy Chapman
Exploring this space with Dina Bell-Laroche was an honor and a gift. Dina Bell-Laroche has a unique and differentiated way of simultaneously leading and walking besides, sitting with you in everything so you never feel alone. There’s no one I’d rather companion me on this journey. Thanks to Dina Bell-Laroche and Grief Unleashed, I’ve seen the depths of my grief and the heights of my joy, opening myself to the idea of a fully lived life. Thanks to Dina Bell-Laroche, I’ve finally surrendered to the notion that grief is beautiful and healthy and all around us, a shared experience and shared language I can use if I simply shed the fear and allow it in.
