About Dr. Greg Wells
Dr. Greg Wells is a scientist, human physiologist, and best-selling author who translates complex science into practical health and peak performance strategies. After breaking his neck at age 15 and returning to elite-level swimming, he completed endurance events including the Nanisivik Marathon, 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle; Ironman Canada; and the Tour d'Afrique. This 11,000-km cycling race is the world's longest. Dr. Greg Wells earned a Ph.D. in Human Physiology, was a tenured professor at the University of Toronto, and is now a Senior Scientist at SickKids Hospital. Dr. Greg Wells is a scientist and human physiologist recognized internationally for advancing the understanding of human performance, health, and recovery through applied science. His work spans elite sport, pediatric health, organizational performance, and public education, with a focus on translating complex research into practical outcomes. At age fifteen, Dr. Greg Wells was training for Canada’s National Youth Swim Team when a catastrophic accident resulted in multiple broken and dislocated cervical vertebrae. After months of traction, neurosurgery, and intensive rehabilitation, he returned to competitive swimming and later raced at Olympic Trials and at the university level.
This early experience shaped Dr. Greg Wells’s lifelong interest in how the human body adapts, heals, and performs under stress. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, followed by a Master’s degree and a PhD in exercise and respiratory physiology. Dr. Greg Wells completed post doctoral fellowships in respiratory medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children and in biomedical engineering at Toronto General Hospital. These roles deepened his expertise in advanced imaging, clinical research, and the application of physiology to complex health challenges.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Greg Wells worked as a physiologist with more than two hundred Olympic and professional athletes. He also served as Director of Sport Science for the Canadian Sport Institute, supporting medal level performance through evidence based training and recovery strategies. Dr. Greg Wells continued his research as a tenured professor at the University of Toronto while maintaining an active clinical research role. He is currently a Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children, where his work focuses on improving the lives of children with chronic illness through physical activity and innovative imaging techniques.
