MASSEY WHITEKNIFE BIOGRAPHY

Massey Whiteknife is an award-winning Indigenous entrepreneur, producer, and entertainer whose influence reaches across business, culture, and social advocacy.

He is a member of the Mikisew Cree First Nation and has devoted his career to advancing Indigenous participation, inclusion, and leadership within Canada’s workforce. Over the past 25 years, Massey has built a series of enterprises dedicated to occupational health and safety, employment training, and community economic development. His work emphasizes sustainable growth, mental wellness, and the empowerment of Indigenous and marginalized populations.

Through his ventures, he has created employment pathways and training opportunities that strengthen communities while preparing individuals to thrive in diverse industries. His leadership promotes a balance between safety, productivity, and cultural identity, demonstrating that economic success and community well-being can exist together.

Massey Whiteknife is widely recognized for his contributions to business and social impact. He received the Eagle Feather Award of Distinction in 2016 for outstanding achievement in Indigenous business and was previously named Alberta’s Youth Entrepreneur of the Year. These honors reflect his dedication to innovation, cultural leadership, and social responsibility.

Born and raised in Conklin, Alberta, Massey overcame significant early-life adversity, including trauma, abuse, bullying, and homelessness. His journey from hardship to success is a story of resilience, perseverance, and personal transformation. These experiences shaped his belief in education, mentorship, and community investment as the foundation of long-term growth and healing.

In his early adulthood, after experiencing post-traumatic stress, Massey discovered a vital part of his identity through his Two-Spirit nature—an Indigenous term that honors both masculine and feminine spirits within one person. This realization led to the creation of Iceis Rain, his female spirit and artistic expression, who became both a source of strength and an avenue for advocacy and creativity.

As Iceis Rain, Massey Whiteknife has become an internationally recognized recording artist and performer. Her debut album The Queen earned five nominations at the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, Best Rock CD, and Best New Artist. Iceis Rain made history as the first Two-Spirit performer to appear live on national television during the awards ceremony, marking a milestone in representation and visibility for LGBTQ and Indigenous communities in Canada.

Her music blends rock and country influences with messages of empowerment, equality, and resilience. Each performance embodies the spirit of authenticity and the celebration of identity, inspiring audiences to embrace their true selves. Iceis Rain’s presence extends beyond the stage into her roles as an advocate, anti-bullying ambassador, and educator on Two-Spirit identity and inclusion.

Massey Whiteknife’s story was featured in the award-winning documentary Oil Sands Karaoke, where his performance and story gained national attention. He later produced the short film God’s Acre, further establishing his role in Indigenous storytelling and film production.

In 2018, his dual journey as entrepreneur and performer became the focus of the acclaimed APTN docuseries Queen of the Oil Patch. The program follows Massey and Iceis Rain as they navigate personal growth, business leadership, and identity, providing a rare and powerful look into the Two-Spirit experience. The series earned critical acclaim for its authenticity and emotional depth, and its second season continues to reach new audiences across APTN and APTN Lumi.

Massey has since become a respected public speaker and cultural educator. He addresses conferences, universities, and corporate audiences on topics including leadership, resilience, Indigenous entrepreneurship, inclusion, and mental wellness. His presentations combine lived experience with practical insight, offering audiences tools to overcome adversity and to cultivate authenticity in both personal and professional life.

Through his work, Massey Whiteknife demonstrates that leadership begins with self-awareness, courage, and compassion. He advocates for workplaces and communities that value diversity, safety, and belonging, encouraging organizations to integrate cultural awareness and emotional intelligence into their operations.

Beyond his public and professional achievements, he continues to serve as a mentor and advocate for Indigenous youth, promoting confidence, education, and self-expression. He is deeply committed to helping others see beyond barriers, emphasizing that identity and strength are intertwined and that healing leads to empowerment.

Today, Massey Whiteknife stands as a leader who bridges the worlds of business and art, embodying the spirit of reconciliation, resilience, and renewal. His legacy continues to expand through his work as an entrepreneur, recording artist, and speaker, inspiring others to lead with authenticity and to build inclusive futures where every voice is valued.
