KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Toronto, Ontario

Mental Health Speaker & Founder of #Sicknotweak, Iconic Canadian Sports Journalist

Former Off the Record host Michael Landsberg is a charismatic icon of the Canadian sports community. He’s also one of the country’s most vocal mental health advocates, the founder of the #SickNotWeak non-profit organization, and is dedicated to eradicating stigma and building community. In his presentations, he shows how the road to healing begins with a non-judgemental conversation.

MICHAEL LANDSBERG BIOGRAPHY

Michael Landsberg is an ambassador for Bell Let’s Talk, an initiative raising awareness about mental health, and the founder of #SickNotWeak, a charity that reframes mental illness as a health issue, rather than a character flaw. The foundation serves as both a resource and community for people living with mental illness and those who wish to support their loved ones.

“I want people who suffer from depression to feel motivated to share and to get help without fear of being judged. And I want people who don’t suffer, but who will be touched by depression, to look at this as an illness and not a weakness and to create an environment where more people can share and not feel like they are being judged,” Michael Landsberg explains.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Michael Landsberg has extended his efforts with #SickNotWeak to create Isolation Nation: a digital program dedicated to mitigating the dangerous effects of social isolation on mental health. Now he wants to bring the message of hope to associations and companies across the country with Isolation Nation Two-Point-Oh!

In his documentary Darkness and Hope: Depression, Sports, and Me, Michael Landsberg opened up about his own struggles with depression, as well as interviewing famous guests about their own battles.

Olympian Clara Hughes, two-time Stanley Cup champion Stéphane Richer, and four-time World Series winner Darryl Strawberry all appeared in the film. Darkness and Hope was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award, and Landsberg was personally honored with the organization’s Humanitarian Award.

The Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health also named Michael Landsberg one of its Champions of Mental Health.

One of the best-known personalities in Canadian broadcasting, Landsberg has been with TSN since the network’s inception. He hosted Off the Record from its debut in 1997 to its finale in 2015 and is currently the co-host of TSN’s First Up.

Twice nominated for the Gemini Award for Best Host or Interviewer in a Sports Program or Sportscast, Landsberg was the Whistler Host for Olympic Daytime on CTV during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. During the London 2012 Olympic Games, he anchored TSN’s Olympic Daytime.

Landsberg suffers from generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Landsberg is a supporter for mental health awareness and is trying to popularize the hashtag #sicknotweak in tribute to his mental illness.

Landsberg has since transformed #sicknotweak from a trending topic to a movement with the launch of sicknotweak.com – a forum for those suffering from depression and a resource for those supporting a loved one who needs help.

isolation nation - supporting mental health through covid-19

  • Michael Landsberg has devoted himself to supporting mental health and wewell-beinghroughout the COVID-19 pandemic with a digital program called Isolation Nation. As someone who has long grappled with mental health issues himself, Landsberg has long shared his personal stories and been an advocate for the importance of mental health support. However, since the start of the pandemic, many more people are now confronting the impact of mental illness.

Loneliness can have a profound impact on both our mental and physical health. In fact, a lack of social connection has been reported to heighten health risks as much as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Hoping to mitigate the dangers of social isolation, Landsberg takes the insights from his wide-ranging broadcast career and numerous high-profile interviews—with guests ranging from Olympic gold medalists to city councillors, former paramedics, and relationship psychologists—and applies them to everyday life in the “new normal” to help uplift and educate

Testimonials

Michael was so good! I was feeling off and could not pin down what was wrong with me. After listening to it, I thought maybe I was feeling a little depressed and anxious. So I decided to look into the RBC Mental Health site and sought help. Thank you for this. I didn’t know that I needed it.

RBC

Michael was excellent! So much better to hear a speaker that has experienced depression than someone who talks from book knowledge. Great information, especially for those with no insight into mental health, what to look for and how to address it. It was the best keynote I have heard in a very long time. Relatable, engaging and real

We were beyond thrilled with Michael! He was an incredible speaker and had such an impact on our community. He was engaging, down-to-earth, humorous, and inspirational. The school where he presented had very positive feedback, and the attendees at our sold-out gala were so impressed. He spent time speaking with our guests, our sponsors, and our youth. Thanks again!

Being in my 40s and dealing with this for the last 4 yrs, I didn’t think to look at my 80+ year-old mom and wonder if she was dealing with the same things. Now I will be having those important and needed conversations with her, especially during this crazy COVID pandemic time we are living in.

'I was pretty much an acquired taste.' Michael Landsberg goes on the record in a Star Q&A

Toronto Star

Longtime TSN broadcaster Michael Landsberg is sitting in front of his laptop these days, writing a script for a five-part television series. The 64-year-old left the network in July, ending 37 years of sports talk combining personality, attitude and a deeper dive into issues of the day. Since then, he’s been working with his daughter, Casey, giving speeches on mental health, and working on their SickNotWeak charitable foundation centring on mental health awareness. The inspiration for this new TV series venture stems from Landsberg’s own battles with the disease, and the fact he is a survivor. With TSN since its inception in 1984, Landsberg was on 5,000 episodes of...

TSN host Michael Landsberg goes on the record about depression

CBC News

Michael Landsberg is helping to give a new face to depression. The TSN television host — known for his swaggering, tough guy style on Off The Record — has opened up publicly about living with mental illness. And Landsberg knows he defies the stereotype. "Every single say of my life, I've heard, 'You're arrogant. You think you're so great — you think you're better than other people,'" he said of the perception of his on-screen personality. "People don't associate a cocky swagger with depression," he said. "But that also makes me a better spokesperson for this." And a spokesperson for mental health awareness he has become. His message: people who live with a mental...
