TikTok creator from Kugluktuk shares his personal journey, desire to promote his culture and educate others

BRADEN KADLUN BIOGRAPHY

Braden Kadlun is an Inuit storyteller, advocate, and content creator committed to celebrating, preserving, and sharing Inuit culture. Born and raised across Nunavut, Nova Scotia, and the Northwest Territories, he has maintained a deep connection to his roots despite navigating personal challenges. His advocacy journey gained national attention in 2017 when a photograph of him wearing a sealskin parka, crafted by his mother as a graduation gift, went viral. This “sealfie” ignited widespread conversations about Inuit traditions, sustainable practices, and cultural representation, reinforcing his commitment to amplifying Indigenous voices and experiences in public discourse.

Braden’s introduction to the public sphere came at the age of 17, when he appeared in The Grizzlies, an acclaimed film that tells an important story from his home community. This early experience in film, paired with his lived reality of life in the North, shaped his understanding of the power of representation in media. Recognizing the role storytelling could play in education, cultural preservation, and empowerment, he began to explore ways to share authentic Inuit narratives with wider audiences.

In 2022, Braden began creating and sharing cultural content across social media platforms, combining personal experiences with educational insights. His videos highlight the Inuit language, traditional foods, and the realities of Northern living while openly sharing his journey of sobriety. His approach balances authenticity and accessibility, offering content that both educates and resonates with Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences alike. That same year, he completed the TikTok Accelerator for Indigenous Creators, a program developed in partnership with the National Screen Institute. This opportunity allowed him to strengthen his digital media skills and establish collaborations with national outlets such as CBC, APTN, and the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).

Braden’s public speaking career has taken him to conferences and events across Canada, where he addresses topics including cultural preservation, mental wellness, and the challenges and opportunities facing Indigenous youth. His ability to connect personal narratives to broader cultural themes allows him to provide audiences with both insight and actionable perspectives.

In 2023, Braden expanded his advocacy into television production by showcasing Indigenous entrepreneurs, Knowledge Keepers, artists, and activists from Treaty 6 and 7 Territories. The program served as a platform for Indigenous storytelling, offering visibility to voices often underrepresented in mainstream media.

In addition to his solo work, Braden facilitates workshops with his mother, Hovak Johnston, a respected advocate in her own right. Together, they address intergenerational healing, the importance of cultural connection, and how traditional knowledge can be integrated into modern life. Their joint work demonstrates the enduring strength of family bonds and the role of culture in personal growth.

Through storytelling, media, and community engagement, Braden Kadlun continues to influence conversations about Indigenous identity, resilience, and cultural pride. His commitment to sharing Inuit culture and promoting healing ensures his work not only informs but also inspires meaningful change for generations to come.
