ERIN THORP BIOGRAPHY

Erin Thorp is an empathic keynote speaker, author, and coach for professionals struggling with conflict, communication, and performance during high-stress times. She is a dynamic, relatable, and engaging speaker inspiring leaders to navigate difficult conversations, build powerful teams, and make an impact using empathy. With 20 years working in a male-dominated engineering and construction industry, leading teams and delivering projects, Erin Thorp noticed that her colleagues were highly skilled and cared deeply about their work, but most were incapable of fully holding their own emotions and therefore unable to hold the emotions of others.

Early in her career, people told Erin, “You’re too emotional! You gotta be tough and get a game face.” After years of unsuccessful attempts to ‘fix’ and ‘get rid of’ her emotions, Erin Thorp decided to get curious about what these emotions might be trying to tell her. She found that her leadership superpower was her emotions. In fact, it was her empathy that served as a powerful and effective tool to lead high-performing teams. Emotional intelligence and technical excellence aren’t mutually exclusive — both skills are imperative to becoming a confident, compassionate leader a team will eagerly follow.

Erin Thorp has a Civil Engineering Degree from the University of Calgary and is an Associate Certified Coach through Integral Coaching Canada. Her first book, Inside Out Empathy, was published in 2017. Erin presents keynotes that touch on the fact that there are currently five generations in our workforce from various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds working together towards common goals. To build high-performance teams, ones that leverage diversity and foster a sense of belonging, we need to embrace our least-talked-about superpower — empathy.

As an engineer turned speaker, Erin gets it. She brings jam-packed sessions with actionable strategies, hilarious stories, and relatable anecdotes to come back to long after the discussion ends. Below you’ll find five topics Erin would love to bring to your group. These are starting points, and every talk is fully customizable for your audience. Erin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Calgary and is an Associate Certified Coach through Integral Coaching Canada. She currently lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with her husband and their three children — where they aren’t afraid to talk about their feelings.

leading with empathy

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Empathy is a workplace value, yet empathy is the competitive edge most leaders are missing. Empathy is the ability to connect with your workforce — emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally — without trying to fix, blame or minimize anyone’s experience. Individuals, teams, and workplace cultures value empathy, leaders’ demonstrated skills are not measuring up.

Leadership demands empathy in a variety of situations and we must practice it when emotions are high, pressure is mounting, and stress is palpable. It’s in these very moments that our abilities determine our impact as a leader.

building better teams

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • The workforce is changing and our workplaces aren’t keeping pace. Our teams are faced with more challenges than ever — 5 generations in the workforce, hybrid work conditions, complex technology demands, doing more with less — which requires a different approach when it comes to leadership.

Using empathy, leaders can bridge the gap between workforce experience and cultures so our teams can deliver results while building meaningful relationships. Inclusive, empathic leaders, increase diversity and create supportive, engaging workplaces.

tackling tough conversations with confidence

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Conversations about missed deadlines, low quality of work, misunderstandings, expectations, asking for what you need, giving feedback — basically any conversation that might be uncomfortable or awkward — cost companies and teams millions of dollars every year in lost production, turnover, and employee disengagement.

Are you a leader who uses email or text instead of phone or face-to-face communication for tough conversations — the ones where there might be conflict or tough news to deliver — and you’re finding it’s not effective? The message gets misinterpreted, things get blown out of proportion, feelings get hurt, and relationships are damaged.

You’ve read the books, attended training — and yet nothing sticks. In the heat of the moment, when you need your skills most — your mind blanks. You’ve got nothing. Looking back after the call, you realize just how many things went wrong. Erin brings a session that is jam-packed with actionable tips to be able to put all of that knowledge into practice so that you have the skills and abilities to tackle tough conversations with confidence and ease.

authenticity and success for purposeful work

  • It’s not that your people dislike working — it’s that they want meaningful work and growth. Your people have ambition for more than just a paycheck. Authentic success is totally possible when we know ourselves well enough to be brave and show up as our real selves instead of adjusting to fit in. As leaders, it’s important to create an inclusive environment where people feel seen and accepted.

the art of meaningful feedback

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Most leaders don’t understand the true purpose behind feedback and most team members cringe when someone says, “I have some feedback for you.” They see it more as a pass/fail test than an invitation to a conversation where deeper meaning and understanding are waiting to be discovered.

Today we have five generations working together, a variety of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, and genders all working together towards a common goal. To create a truly diverse workforce, we need a new way to manage our team’s performance and provide ongoing performance-related feedback to develop and inspire our teams.

positive feedback and recognition

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • Have you ever asked yourself why you need to praise your team for doing their job?  Do you wonder how to motivate the team so they go above and beyond? Do you find yourself thinking what is it actually going to take to engage your team? If you have ever contemplated these questions, you’re are not alone.

Recognition is one form of feedback that leaders feel the most comfortable giving, and do the least often.  With the human brain being hard-wired to look for what’s not working, catching people doing things well requires intention and practice.  In this 60-minute keynote discover the research behind recognition and why it is so powerful, how much positive feedback is enough and 3 simple practices you can implement immediately to boost morale and increase engagement.

burnout-proof your life

  • Virtual PresentationKeynote PresentationWorkshop SessionHalf Day TrainingFull Day Training
  • The hybrid workplace has its benefits. On the flip side, one of the biggest downsides is working all the time. It’s hard to disconnect from work when the lines of family and work are blurry.

Success and ambition are fantastic fuel sources for getting ahead — but at what cost? Busyness is often celebrated, and the price we pay is burnout. Today it’s entirely within our control to make meaningful contributions without forfeiting our health, our family, or our hobbies. Let Erin show you how!
