Gotlib’s opioid addiction began eight years ago when he sought medical treatment for back and leg pain. He went to an Edmonton hospital emergency room, and while waiting was given two Percocets. He was diagnosed with sciatica and the doctor sent him home with six more pills.

Joel Gotlib is an award-winning writer, producer & host who’s open for contract work creating current affairs programs, corporate videos, or personal stories.  Joel is an award-winning storyteller with decades of experience in television & media production.  The former CTV Edmonton News anchor, reporter & producer worked at stations across Canada after graduating with a B.A.A. from Ryerson University’s Radio & Television Arts program in Toronto in 1991.

Joel Gotlib understands the inside workings of news operations and how to deal with the media when there’s a crisis.  He also can assist in accessing the contacts you may need.

When Joel Gotlib has a project, he does everything in his power to create the best possible piece of work.  When interviewing people, he treats them with empathy and respect.  When working with clients & colleagues,  he does the same & ensures all lines of communication in the production process are open & free-flowing.  Just like every production element matters, so too does every person.

Joel Gotlib has learned from some of the best in the business over the past 3 decades & he is a proud recipient of an AMPIA (Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association Award) for Best Producer, News Series.  He realized telling stories with pictures & sound was in his DNA since 1989 when he walked through the door of the Radio & Television Arts program at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Canada’s 5th largest market came calling in 1997 when he moved to CFRN in Edmonton (CTV) to work as a noon news anchor backup-up 6 anchor & breaking news reporter.  2 years later, he accepted the challenge of helping lead a start-up station’s newsroom in Winnipeg, reporting & anchoring & co-producing at A-Channel Manitoba.

In 2004, he returned to Toronto to work at Global News, reporting & back-up anchoring the Morning show for a brief time but was swayed back west to CTV Edmonton before the year ended and spent 14 more years there.  Alberta’s capital city is now home to him.

Joel Gotlib, a former television news anchor in Edmonton and recovering opioid addict, highlights the urgent need to address the convergence of the COVID-19 and opioid crises in his insightful article. Drawing from personal experience, Joel emphasizes the importance of improved access to naloxone and support systems to save lives and help individuals find a path to recovery.

Opinion: We need to do more to save lives as COVID-19 and opioid crises converge

Edmonton Journal

Alberta is one of the provinces hardest hit by the opioid crisis. The latest numbers from the provincial government show there were 603 opioid-related deaths in 2019, with just under two people dying every day. These are real people with families and friends. These are people suffering from an opioid addiction who needed emergency treatment before coronavirus impacted recovery options.
