TYLER SMITH BIOGRAPHY

Tyler Smith, and his partner Kat Kastner, came out on top of a tight final leg to become the winners of Amazing Race Canada Season 9. Team #TyKat captured the hearts of Canadians while dominating large portions of the race. After a long and hard-fought race, the couple battled together, to finish as champions of the Amazing Race.

Tyler Smith, a former Humboldt Bronco and survivor of the horrific bus crash, that took the lives 16 of his teammates, staff members, and coaches, while he and 12 others survived. Tyler Smith has no memory of the worst day of his life, something the 21-year-old considers “a blessing in disguise.” On April 6, 2018, Tyler and his junior hockey team, the Humboldt Broncos, were on their way to a playoff game when a semi-truck struck their bus.

The couple won 4 individual legs before the final, despite having a large target on their backs from most of the other teams, who attempted to take them out at multiple points, to no avail. Ty and Kat referred to “16 angels” often throughout the race, and Tyler’s heartfelt tribute to his fallen teammates during the finale was the perfect finishing touch to a race run with class, competitive spirit, and an undeniably fun and contagious energy.

Tyler Smith has been a KidSport Ambassador since 2022. After Tyler Smith physically recovered, Tyler returned to the Broncos. He made it back for ten games, and although his body felt fine, his mental health was starting to catch up with him.

Tyler didn’t feel like himself and knew he needed to step away from the game and prioritize his mental recovery. Tyler Smith has made progress with his recovery, but the battle that Tyler is facing is an ongoing one – some days are better than others, and some will always be challenging, but he now feels better equipped to handle the difficult moments when they come.

For him, he never understood mental health or anything that related to it for that matter. Courage, vulnerability, bravery, Tyler Smith would have never attached those words to mental health before the accident. Before the crash, Tyler never understood the powers of a safe space for a meaningful conversation and the profound impact it has on the journey of healing.

Before suffering from mental health and trauma, Tyler’s everyday interactions were mostly surface-level conversations and taking for granted the support system he had in his life. As a young man, he never wanted to show others any hint of struggle or imbalance.

After the physical injuries healed, Tyler went through a deep reflection, trying to make sense of the incident for himself, and the families that lost their loved ones. After attending funerals, doing his best to avoid the public eye and surrounding himself with the people who could relate or support him as best they could, Tyler had to come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t doing okay.

Through deep reflection, going through the ups and downs of grief, and moving in and out of his support circles, Tyler realized he had to start seeking out help and find a new path to heal.  As much as the physical injuries took their toll, it was the mental injuries that he should have focused on from the start.

Tyler Smith finally put himself first and allowed himself to take care of him for the first time in his life and what a relief that was now that he reflected. Understanding and acknowledging that you are struggling takes a lot of strength and courage. He accepted his emotions and had meaningful conversations with those who loved him.

Bottling things up and chucking them on the back burner of his mind was the easy way out for him at the time. He continually made small steps in his healing journey and now took advantage of self-care tools like counselling.

After years of inner work, realized he needed to give back. Tyler Smith has found his mental health awareness clothing line called ‘Not Alone Co.’ Not Alone is a social enterprise clothing company that promotes and all about helping facilitate meaningful conversations around PTSD, trauma, and open conversations surrounding mental health.

Not Alone donates portions of the proceeds to different charities and foundations across Canada including Jack.org. Tyler hopes to build a lasting community with Not Alone that focuses on vulnerability and conversation.

Public speaking was never something that Tyler imagined himself doing, but it’s now one of his true passions in life. Tyler Smith has seen the value of sharing his story and of hearing personal stories from others, which is why he is so passionate about sharing his story and being a mental health advocate.”

Through is own sense of healing, Tyler Smith is now speaking to help others realize the importance of having a safe space for others to share their struggles and for communities, colleagues, friends, and family to support those who face challenges, illnesses and difficult environments others and themselves at risk.

Tyler Smith co-hosts a podcast with NHL veteran Riley Sheahan of the Buffalo Sabres called ‘Speak Your Mind.’ With Speak Your Mind, Riley and Tyler hope to continue to normalize conversations around mental health with a wide variety of guests starting with the sports world, entertainment space and many more.

Testimonials

Tyler was amazing to work with and we all left with new ways of approaching our daily lives. After listening to Tyler, I will never approach my mental health or the mental health of others the same way. Our audience left inspired, and we left to rethink how our organization approaches managing the health of our employees.

One action I take as a result of what I learned today from Tyler Smith is the need to not push people away. I’m someone who like Tyler keeps my emotions on the back burner. I don’t like to confront my feelings or even acknowledge them. What Tyler said about the feeling of vulnerability setting him free and making him feel better will stick with me for the rest of my life, and I can’t thank him enough for coming and speaking to us after all he has gone through.

Mount Royal University

The number of takeaways I took from Tyler Smith’s story of heartbreak and personal growth is so large it is going to be hard to narrow it down to just three. I think the action I am going to take as a result of the lessons I learned from Tyler Smith’s presentation is I am going to try and work mentally to feel more comfortable opening up about my emotions. I’ve known people in my past and know some in my present that would not care or reason properly if I opened up to them.

Humber College

Tyler Smith is a true hero. The messages he shared inspired us all to practice being available for others and offer them a place to express what they are going through in a supportive, non-judgmental way.

Timmons Chamber of Commerce

Tylers presentation was amazing. We are honoured to have him share his authentic story with us. His ability to connect with the audience while moving through his story allowed us to better understand our own mental health, and how to create spaces of trust so that we can speak up. We were all taken back on how he has gone through so much and has come full circle to spread awareness for his cause. The T-shirts we got were also a cherry on top. Keep it up Tyler!

The way you show up to the mental health conversation is admirable and we were all blessed to hear your message. Truly inspiring! Keep up your mission as you are changing lives!
